Kindle firmware 5.13.0.5 (for Kids Edition)

The Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page is showing version 5.13.0.5 for the Kindle (10th Generation) Kids Edition. This is a new model released at the end of October.

There is no download link. It instead says:

I wonder whether allowing only online updates is going to be a new thing for Kindles going forward or if this is a special case.

If so it's stupid. I know people that had to get the guy in Currys to register the Kindle because they don't know how to work the WiFi.

Also not everyone even has WiFi!

You can use our libraries' WiFi on a Laptop, but it doesn't work on a kindle.

I'd also stop buying eBooks from Amazon if they disabled the "download to PC and transfer via USB option."

Seems idiotic on many levels. WiFi or Mobile (some models) automatic update should only be an option; you should be able to decline, accept or use PC download.

I have about sixty WiFi names and passwords for places I frequent and only one has a system that prevents a Kindle from connecting. They're all free and my cell phone connects automatically when I walk in.

I've never experience a wifi that my kindle won't connect to except for one at a local grocery store that seems to only broadcast on 5 GHz.

And given that I have unlimited "5mbps" tethering on my phone plan...
(That said, you might have to manually open the browser and click through an invalid certificate error or in some cases use something like neverssl.com to trigger the captive portal)

Maybe the newest software has some kind of "value-added" feature that they don't want you to be able to add to the non-children's version without paying for the right edition?

IIRC the Kindle Kids doesn't support sideloaded content?

EDIT: Apparently that's only on child profiles?

Seems plausible.

Also, maybe they don't want kids to be able to update to a non-kids firmware.

Because this new firmware cannot be downloaded it isn't possible to take a look. We will have to wait until someone receives it and reports.

Hilton hotel chain (any brand) wifi is incompatible with Kindle as well.

I hope they're not going to get rid of the 'transfer via usb' option. If they do, I won't be able to buy another book from Amazon! They would also lose my, "while I'm here, I'll just have a look at . . " sales.

I don't have wifi. I don't have a smart phone. My moby is dumb and can only text and call - by choice. I just HATE the way everyone is buried in a device while out. I gently ask friends to switch their phones off, or put them away, apart from one who has family emergencies.

If I really needed to buy an ebook from Amazon, I would have to annoy one of my friends across the road. I imagine I'll become very unpopular!

So let's hope this is specific to this firmware upgrade.

If it doesn’t allow side loaded books does Amazon also disable the Download and Transfer via USB function for that model?

The version number for the Kid's Edition firmware on the Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page has been bumped slightly from 5.13.0.5 to 5.13.0.8. There is still no download link and it still has the same note that updates will be installed automatically.

Hopefully this new software delivery approach will continue to apply only to this one Kindle model.

Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page shows the version of the Kids Edition firmware bumped again from 5.13.0.8 to 5.13.0.9. It's odd that there are these frequent incremental bumps to this firmware.

Does anyone own one of these devices?

If so is Amazon pushing these updates out to you?
