Terminal user accounts?

Whilst my Aura H2O was attached to a serial console, amongst the many messages output I noticed a login prompt pass by.
Poking around on an SD card image I notice that there is a passwd file in /rootfs/etc with the following content:

Does anybody know if these accounts are used? If so what might the passwords be, presumably they are the same for all Kobos as they only relate to using the console.
If I ever get my Aura to work again I will need to do some stuff via the serial console, so it would be useful to know the root/admin logins.

Root has no password. And when developer mode is on, telnet is running. So, to get basic shell access, all one needs to do is enable developer mode on the Kobo and enable Wifi. Login as root with no password.

(At least, this is true for 4.x firmwares I believe)

If you want something more sophisticated than telnet, NiLuJe's Kobo Stuff package includes dropbear to add SSH access.

One assumes the serial console will be similarly unprotected.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately my Aura H2O broke before I could set developer mode to on and once I get it fixed (if I can fix it at all) the screen may not be fully legible, hence the need to use the serial console.
I'll try the root account then.
