no toc in viewer in v 4.0, 4.1

I run Calibre on a Windows 10 computer. When I tried to upgrade to v 4.1 from v 3.x, I found that the viewer first loaded with an unreadable font. After it loaded, I could read the book, but there was no table of contents sidebar. I tried 4.0 instead, and found the same behavior. I've downgraded to v.3.8 and everything is working again, but I'm at a loss to explain the problem.

If you want to see the toc, press esc and click on Table of Contents. Or press ctrl+t
