Embed font family option entry in preferences not sticking

Choosing a font for the Embed font family setting in preferences is not sticking in the Look & Feel section of the conversion dialog, i.e. it is blank.

Preferences > Conversion > Common options > Look & Feel > Embed font family

Secondary question: Some books don't convert to the font specified in the PDF Output section of the conversion dialog. But choosing my preferred font to embed in the Look & Feel section works. Why does this work? Thanks.

Update: It's sticking now. I guess it required me to restart the conversion dialog a few times to take effect.

as the help for the PDF options notes, they specify the fonts to be used when the input document does not specify any fonts/uses generic fonts.

Oh I see. Thanks for the clarification.

Then, moving forward, is it OK to convert all my books to PDF by embedding my preferred font in the Look & Feel section by default? Would this cause problems when the input document does specify its own fonts?

Why would you want to convert to PDF? That's a terrible format to convert to.

If you are reading on an Amazon Fire tablet, convert to Kf8 or ePub depending n which app you are using to read your eBooks.

If you have a Reader and it's a Kindle that handles KF8, convert to KF8. If you have a Reader that's a Kobo or some other Reader that handles ePub, convert to ePub.

PDF is a terrible idea unless you actually have a need for it.

I don't have or even want a physical ebook reader. I usually just read the converted PDFs on my PC or phone.

To me, that makes even less sense. There will be a good ereader app for both for whatever the starting format is. Why add the extra work?

Agreed. But, I usually just use calibre to convert my purchased amazon kindle ebooks to PDFs. I find that reading PDFs is easier to navigate, either on my PC or phone. UX is far better with PDFs.

I really can't agree with that latter statement. For fiction, the resizing and reflowing of an epub is much better to me. And no page headers or artificial page breaks wasting space and distracting me. I like the calibre viewer on the PC. I don't use the phone enough to read to make any suggestions there. Other than I find PDF clumsy on the phone.

To clarify, I find Kindle Reader for PC to be very clumsy/clunky for both fiction and non-fiction books. Instead, I read the converted PDFs in Acrobat DC Reader, which IMO offers much better UX. On the other hand, on my Android phone, I actually prefer to use the Kindle Reader app over the Acrobat Reader app. (I agree that PDFs are clumsy on the phone.) And, to be honest, I think epubs may actually offer better UX for fiction as you stated. I'm going to try it out soon on my PC.

What phone do you have? Try converting to ePub and trying some of the apps available for your phone.

For android, Moon+ (or is it Moon Reader) is said to be good.
