Device: Kobo Glo HD
Question Set Device to show Filenames Instead of Tags

Hey everyone. newcomer here, salute and best wishes. I hope I could be contributive for anything I can.

Anyways, title says it all. I have Glo HD with 3.14 firmware. Nothing have changed though, I have a huge collection and all of the books come directly from the pc itself, and they are mostly my class notes. there are lots of them and it's more painful than a championship crosswords sometimes to find a specific note in the device.

a basic Herodotus.pdf would show as the creators windows username as author and some gibberish as title. as it was "Michael / new pdf document" in the list the device shows me.

so including epubs and all the fromats, I want my device to show straightforward filenames instead of author-title tags. I don't need them. All my books are already arranged by filenames like "Milton - Paradise lost (1765 print)" etc. so, it gets very confusing when browsing inside the reader interface.

I already peeked and couldn't find anything to change inside the sqlite file. if you know a solution to this, please tell me.

2. this issue again, the search option only searches for tags instead of filenames. and yet again I'm forced to find a document manually browsing among hundreds of others.

Long story short; I want to be able to browse, sort search and see my books by their barebone filenames inside the reader, instead of tags.

3. is there any way to read jp2 files? Do I have to convert them into pdf's or ocr them through into epub's? are there plugins?

My personal recommendations would be either:

1. Use KoReader if you are reading mostly pdf files (place the files in a directory starting with a '.' to keep the Kobo firmware from processing them. I.e. .KRLibrary Check the Developer's Corner here for the one-click installers for KFMon, KOReader and/or Plato.

2. Use calibre to edit the metadata and then send the files to your Kobo.

I'm not sure what you mean by reading a jp2 file? I seem to remember that a jp2 file is a jpeg variant using wavelet compression. You could convert them to a standard jpeg and then your Kobo would display them as images.

a . folder and koreader sounds nice but, would it cause any losses, instabilities or slowdowns within the device? afaik it processes over the main system separately, so there is like 2 of them running.

calibre is, in my eyes, cancerous. I've once tried doing it couple of years ago, bulk removing tags, this extremely smart software ended up deleting every filename aswell along with tags. so every book in my library was literally named to "0"

if there's any possibility doing this within the reader, I'll be gladly waiting. I'll go read that koreader thread. maybe I'm wrong, but I'd prefer not having any additional stuff on reader's os right now.

i.e. You put whatever you want for Title, author, series, subtitle, publisher, synopsis and that's what your reader will use. Also you can add covers. There is even a basic cover editor plug in.

calibre is certainly powerful, and will do what's asked, even if it's silly. It's completely inaccurate to describe it a "cancerous".

Out of curiosity, how did you try bulk removing tags? Did you select books, right click, edit metadata in bulk, check the remove all checkbox at the end of the remove tags line and click OK? I use that rather often and have never had any book titles changed during the process.

Realistically, I have trouble seeing how the filenames would have been changed by bulk removing the tags. The basic bulk metadata edit does not even a place to modify the title other than swapping the title and author fields. The search and replace edit does have the capability to mess with the title field but it has that message at the top of the page: "You can destroy your library using this feature. Changes are permanent. There is no undo function, You are strongly encouraged to back up your library before proceeding."

OTOH, calibre is like any other computer program and will do what you ask it to do regardless of how wrong the action might be. Powerful, yes. Useful, yes. Smart, no. Cancerous, no.

I would rate the chances of doing this using Kobo's firmware as being around the level of a multi-spindle automatic lathe being used to make M22 bolts suddenly churning out a Tesla (model of your choice) complete with all optional accessories.

Kobo's firmware reads the metadata from the file and assumes that the file has correct metadata. If, not Garbage In, Garbage Out. It's been a few years since I've seen a commercial epub or pdf that has metadata with incorrect title and author information. Most of what I use calibre's metadata editing for now is covers, comments and series.

Edit: I am still wondering why you want to read jp2 image files on your Kobo ereader.

Calibre has options to set the title and author from the filename when importing.
Also the GetFilename extension can save the original filename in a custom column.

I know, I know guys, there's a slight misunderstanding here, I've said calibre is cancerous "in my own eyes" just like a childhood trauma, the first time I tried it, got me deleting every name of every single book in my 10.000 library. I'd rather consider it my own fault, but equally the software's blunt face too. I honestly respect the work of people doing software development stuff all the way. any kind of it. I know how hard it is.

anyways, tried to install KOReader then. Just did as the thread told me, unzipped anything on the storage and kobo restarted, chose koreader png but nothing happened. the other one gave me a caution about launching then that was all.

I didn't want to push further for I could've brick the reader.

I doN't know why it didn't work tho. I remember using koreader few years ago.

@Grn: Which thread? There a few legacy threads with a rather large amount of cobwebs and blatantly outdated info around.

If that was indeed the right one, let's move the discussion over there .
