about boox max 2 antialiasing, font smoothing or whatever it is
Hello
after some weeks using the max 2 and reading for some hours today, I was thinking I was going crazy because since I have the device, a lot of times though my vision was strange, as if I couldn't focus correctly on the text, and the letters looked washed out or not sharp enough. That never happened to me with other readers, so I opened the same book on the DR1000S from 10 years ago with 160dpi against the 207 of the max 2, and well. Even with a better screen and technology, the max 2 it isn't as comfortably as the dr1000s to read. Yes, if you look closely at few cm to both of them you can see some difference on the pixels, but when you are actively trying to read, the max 2 looks blurry against the dr1000s when it should be the opposite. Is there any way to change the antialiasing or whatever the max is doing to the fonts? Disabling it on android or something like that? It could look awesome without it, but it does not. It isn't as sharp as it should be and it is doing a worse job than a device 10 years older with less resolution. And I am talking about all the system, onyx neoreader, librera or whatever, everyone have the same problem, it is a system problem. And it is even worse if you try to use serif fonts when it should be the opposite, as with more resolution serif fonts should be more readable, but I am being forced to use lato or super big serif fonts (like 20 or more) just because the poor rendering job the max 2 is doing destroying the tiny details. Hello Whopper,
I can compare the M92 with the Max2, and like you I remove my glasses to read the text at few centimeters of my eyes. For me the Max2 is nearly perfect, but I don't use the default font. I use the Caudex font or some specific Linux font like Libertine for printed document for EPUB. I don't change the font for PDF document. The test is done with NeoReader 2. Some applications like Librera use a quality factor which change the perception of the font, for the PDF with Librera I set a 150 % factor. Maybe, you could post a text to test and give the context : firmware's version, application used, font, font's size. |

Max2 has a glossy touch foil on top of the e-ink. I am not satisfied with reading experience outdoors when the light comes all around and makes the screen look washed out.
Eventually I decided to try the matte screen protector from ereader.store, it's on the way. I'll let you know if it is really matte and wether it improves the reading comfort. |

Trying other fonts as randy suggested solved most of my problem, bookerly works fine.
the text is still less "sharp" but now it doesn't bug me. |

Hi Whooper! You wrote to me a few weeks ago that NeoReader could also work with another dictionary application (eg with GoldenDict or Color Dict) and that this is specified in the Onyx Notes User Manual. I did not find anything neither in the manual, nor in NeoReader settings, or in the system settings (updated to 1.9.1). Can you give me some clue?
Thank you very much! |

I've seen this paragraph but it's about dictionary-files not dictionary-application. For example, when I use the Librera application and I want to translate a word, it ask me wich dictionary-application I want to use for translation GoldenDict or ColorDict (these I have installed in my Onyx Note device)
But it seems that NeoReader works only with the built-in application (called Dict), which is not so well-tuned. There are, for example, stardict dictionary-files in which the GoldenDict application finds flexionary words and Dict (built-in Note appl) finds nothing ... I insist on this because I have not yet found a good stardict-file dictionary for Romanian. Thanks anyway. Another question: The NeoReader (built-in) application does not appear on my screen among the other apps, and the note app is called yet Note, not Knote, and after updating 1.9.1. Is that right? |

yes, it doesn't appear as an app on the multitasking tab after you have switched to other.

I don't like it either, but is how it works. anyway, unless you need to take notes, librera eats neoreader for breakfast. Last edited by whopper; 09-08-2018 at 12:01 AM. |

In spite of these problems, I like Neoreader for many reasons, including the ease in working with multiple documents (it allows me to open the same document several times to not browse for the notes from the end of the chapter), the options for 'navigation' (I have a big collection of books that are just two-page photos and the 'article mode' option is very useful to me) and it seems to work faster than tird party apps ...
