ebook DVD renamer?
If you have one of those compilation ebook DVDs (i.e. Project Gutenberg's) how do you rename all files to something more informative? Thanks!

Download, right-click, then choose the rename option.

You can use a program like The Rename to do a batch rename.
It'll allow you to add a prefix or suffix, or replace part of the name. Its saved my Sanity a couple of times ![]() |

I have the Blackmask DVD with about 11,000 .lit & .zip public domain ebooks and there is no easy way, unfortunately, to rename them to something more useful. I tried something but it took too long to do the entire DVD; only got half-way through. (I imported the index into Excel and parsed it based on position and/or special character) Manually only works for a few; but not all files. ![]() I remember looking at the PG book index list but, honestly, couldn't figure out how to extract the info I need to rename them as 'author - title'. It's too bad they don't make this easy (for you to rename their cryptic filenames). You would think that if they did it ONCE, we wouldn't have to do this MANY times over. ![]() Anybody manage to do this... |

Well, I figure that the files have metadata that indicate the title and author... isn't there any way to automate this so that it takes that information and puts it as the file name automatically?

Unfortunately, the only program's I've seen that pull the metadata from the files have been for music files.
Think part of the problem is that different formats store metadata in different ways, as such making it difficult. |

calibre automatically extracts metadata from over 20 different file types as well as having a configurable method for extracting metadata from file names.

That's interesting. I Haven't really used Calibre much so I'm not completely up to date on it. Can you then Automate the renaming process, using the metadata? |

When books are added to calibre, it automatically resaves them in its library folder sorted in sub folders, properly named by author and title.
