Calibre 3.21

Cannot find version 3.21 discussed anywhere so have a query.

I run a very large Calibre database and it has been brilliant. Been with Calibre for many years and always been very impressed.

Only since I have upgraded to have my PC is grinding to a halt. I run Calibre Portable on a Western Digital plug in drive around 4Tb with 13.4Gb free at present. The last I checked the Calibre database was around 500Mb.
Has been running fine but now suddenly find that it becomes almost impossible to use. Machine has 16Gb memory, running Intel i5 at around 1.80 GHz.
Opinion needed - the problem comes down to disk access permanently high while Calibre running. all other parts ok

Difficult to think what might be the issue. On my system there is no disk activity if Calibre is idle. Ideas that occur to me are:
  • Calibre is running a background task. This might happen if Calibre has to recreate the metadata.opf file (used to recover the Calibre metadata database if it gets corrupted) stored with each book. However this task normally runs at a low priority so that it does not impact performance.
  • Windows is swapping Calibre to/from disk. You do not mention what might be running in parallel with Calibre. It seems that you should have enough RAM to stop this happening, but looking in Windows Task Manager should help determine this.

I have some chunky libraries on 2TB WD Black Caviar mounted in an Astone usb 3.0 disk dock attached to a USB 3 port on a 16Gb i7-7700, and I have not observed any performance degradation with calibre 3.21 on those libraries or the libraries on my internal drives..

Sounds to me like you have hardware problems, could be the drive itself, could be the drive carrier SATA/USB interface, or the USB cable, or the USB port on your PC. If the drive carrier is USB 3 make sure its attached to a USB 3 port, they're normally blue, and make sure the cable is up to scratch.

Suggest you download the WD disk analysis & diagnostics kit and run it.

There haven't been any changes in 3.21 itself that could affect database performance. Check your third party plugins, sometimes there could be an incompatibility causing issues, run calibre from a command prompt as

calibre.exe --ignore-plugins

Thanks everyone. Seems to have sorted itself out after trying a few of the suggestions made.
