Advancing chapters on Kindle

I have a Kindle 4 and find that the vast majority of mobi books and even most converted epub ones advance chapter to chapter via the arrow control button. I've come across a few mobi ones lately that don't and am wondering why and if there's anything to do about it in conversion via calibre. Thanks,

It depends on whether there is a function ToC in the book.

So it's the function, not necessarily the existence of a table of contents? I've had a lot of books, most fiction for example, that don't have an actual table of contents, just chapters, and they advance with the button.

When you convert in calibre table of contents are often automatically generated if calibre can detect a structure for the book.

If your EPUB did not advance, then any conversion will follow.

The Spine section of the OPF chains the sections (chapters) together.
IIRC linear=no blocks that section
