Add new format?

In addition to my ebooks, I have a large library of paper books.

Is there some way I can add something like "Paperbook" to my list of possible formats in Calibre? That way I can search and/or describe all of my books in one place.

I understand that I can add paper books as -no-format- but I'd like to be able to conspicuously flag these books as being in my paper library. Using tags is just not obvious enough.

I realize this will probably involve editing some config file deep in the guts of Calibre. Can it be done?

Thanks!

You can add files of any extension you want to calibre. Simply select the All files option in the add books dialog. Create a single file with a .paper extyension and add it to calibre everytime you want a paper book revord.

@jcrawfordx - and if you wanted to add an icon for the "paperbook" filetype (format), you would add, paperbook.png (128bit square), to the .../resources/images/mimetype subfolder in the calibre configuration folder.

The icon will appear in dialogues such as Edit metadata, View specific format, Removed selected formats etc.

@Kovid- This worked great! (I have decided to call this nulll format as "@PAPER" instead of "paperbook" as originally cited.)

Here's what I did: I selected the target book listings, then "Add Books" --> "Add files to selected records", navigated to my test.@PAPER file, pulled down the file type dropdown, selected "all files" and then selected my test.@PAPER file. BINGO! It added "@PAPER" for the format columns for my selected books. Very nice! :-)
Also noticed that Shift+A from main Calibre screen is a shortcut for this. MARVELOUS!

---------

@Better Red - Installing the icon did not work. I did as you said, but in the Edit Metadata screen in the Formats box (upper right corner) my "@PAPER" format showed up as text (as 0.00 MB size), but the icon to the left of it just has a question mark in it. It's not my @PAPER icon.

I had placed a 128x128 version of "@PAPER.png" in C:\Program Files\Calibre2\app\resources\images\mimetypes.

Do I need to "install" it in some config or something?

Thanks to both of you for your help with this!

This is not the folder BetterRed was talking about.
To open the configuration folder, in calibre, go to preferences -> miscellanous -> Open calibre configuration directory
(this folder is somewhere in your user folder, but it's a hidden folder)

If you put your file in the resources\images\mimetypes folder there it should work!
