New Problem: IOError [Errno12] Not Enough Space

I've had this problem twice in the last week: IOError [Errno12] Not Enough Space.
Each time, I also get this error soon after: "Profile Error Occurred: Your preferences can not be read." All I was doing was editing an .epub file using the Book Editor in Calibre.

When this happens, I can't save (in any way) the .epub I'm editing in the Book Editor. I can't close other programs I have open (I keep getting "not enough space" error messages when trying to do anything), and the only thing I can do is to restart the computer. Also, Chrome (or Windows) came up both times with a message giving me the choice to reset my Chrome preferences (the first time, I said yes, and then had to reinstall Chrome, etc; the second time, I said no, and Chrome worked fine after restarting the computer).

The first time this happened, the book I was working on suddenly had no access to the .css files, and the formatting was not like I had coded it to be (when looking at the Preview window in the Book Editor).

I don't know if this is a Calibre 3.8 problem, a motherboard, hard drive, or a power supply that's failing (I've had no other symptoms that make me think it's a hardware failure), or if it's because I do things too fast when using the Book Editor.

Could this be a hardware problem? The reason I'm leaning that way is because the motherboard, hard drive, and power supply are all about 4 or 5 years old, and it seems like it might be time to upgrade my computer parts.

Thanks for any help or advice!

Check your Hard drive. for file system errors, permissions to the temp

Calibre uses the Temp (Tmp) folder for the book under edit, the restore (undo) buffer.
AND
Original_EPUB if still enabled. That's 3 to 4 times the book size
AND
if your system is low on RAM, Swap file (pagefile)

Thanks for your response.

Last night, I increased the swap file size from 13?0MB to 1900MB and don't know yet if that will help or not.

Permissions to the temp folder are for Administrators; I'm the administrator, so I don't think that's the problem.

Last month, I added another 8GB RAM chip to have a total of 16GB, which hasn't made any difference in my computer's performance.

I haven't run chkdsk yet but will probably do so in the near future. I haven't seen any other problems that would indicate there is a hard drive problem, though.

The other day, I sprayed all the dust out of my computer and checked all the cables, etc.

The second time this happened, I was editing one 1841KB epub file. The first time this happened, I believe I was editing a 61MB file that took about 60 hours to fix all the formatting and lots of other things. When I'm editing a large file like that, I have to exit Calibre now and then and restart the computer, since Calibre uses tons of memory and tends to crash often.

A few days ago, I finally did some research into the problems I was having with Calibre being very slow and crashing (for example, the Book Editor sometimes closes suddenly while running some feature, like Check Book, Smarten Punctuation, Save File, etc, and it was running very slowly with large files), and found the Calibre Cache folder, which contained many folders from previous crashes. I ran CCleaner, which only deleted some of the old folders, and then I deleted the rest of the Calibre folders manually. The slowness problem went away after I did that. I'm now checking the Temp folder regularly to make sure the Calibre folders get deleted upon exit of Calibre. But this new "Not enough space" problem has me puzzled.

Standard Permissions should be for the USER

Admins usually need to invoke UAC or SUDO to get elevated rights

I don't have to invoke anything, since I have elevated rights on everything. I'm the only user on all my computers, and UAC is disabled on all my computers. The UAC would have nothing to do with this problem, since the problem just started and has occurred twice in the last week, plus several crashes have occurred recently while using Calibre. I have no crashes or any other problems when I'm not using Calibre. I hope I've conveyed the problem I'm having accurately.

EDITED: I lied. I have had problems with Explorer crashing (since Windows 8.1, now using Windows 10) -- and haven't been able to find the solution yet for that problem.

@deback - you can privatise the calibre cache and temps via a couple of Environment variables, see ==>> Environment Variables

Won't solve your problems but it may help isolate them.

Then it could be be a dodgy shell extension, they can be disabled in CCleaner->Tools->Start-Up>Context menu, or via nirsoft's ShellExView.

I've noticed that Win10 explorer seems to restart itself at the drop of a hat; no harm done though.

Thank you for that advice! I just added two new environment variables (for cache and temp)--to see if that helps solve the problem.

What happens frequently is a blank window will open when I open an Explorer window. (I've spent lots of time researching this, trying to find a solution, but I haven't found it yet.) Then I have to use TaskMgr to close Explorer and reopen it, or if I've been working all day in Calibre (which is normal for me), I'll just reboot the computer. I'll check out the setting in CCleaner you recommended. Thanks!

EDITED: I've disabled some and all of the startup programs using both the Task Manager and the Registry, and nothing I've done with startup programs solved the problem. (Instead of opening CCleaner, you can just hit CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to open the Task Manager quickly, and then you can disable any of the startup programs in the Startup tab -- or do a find for "startupfolder" in the registry, if you want to delete any of the startup entries.)

I've never seen Win10 Explorer restart itself. On my computer, it just periodically crashes and has to be closed and reopened.

I've never had Win10 explorer restart. Win10 is very stable here.

Just to be clear on the shell extensions, I was specifically referring to :

I don't have any explorer crashes as such, but my task bar and the desktop icons refresh (disappear and reappear, in the blink of an eye) - which is what I see, if I stop and start explorer deliberately. I suspect its related to something like MWB or Defender doing a scan, or downing new sig files or something. As I said no harm done. If I had my task bar hidden, and my desktop entirely covered up I probably wouldn't even see it.

Might be Firefox, it crashes with the about same frequency as the later releases of Netscape did 20 years ago - even when my hat is stuck firmly in place

I rarely use Firefox, so I know that Firefox is not causing any problems on my computer. Regarding Netscape, that was all I used back in the 90s, until it started crashing, which forced me to use IE for a while, until I discovered Chrome. (Sometimes, I wish I was still using just DOS and writing batch files...sometimes...)

Post the full error message. It sounds like whatever drive you have the calibre temporary directory on is running out of space.
