Calibre 3.8 Convert PDF To Epub

I notice in a number of cases that I cannot successfully convert a PDF to an epub. The process gets stuck indefinitely on 'converting input to HTML' and never goes past 1%, no matter how long I let it run. This was happening in 3.7, as well. This doesn't happen with all PDFs, just some. Is there something I can do to optimize this?

I knew there was a reason I didn't like PDFs. The good part is that the file eventually finished converting, though I have no idea how many hours it might have taken. I try to avoid PDF whenever possible, but sometimes it's the only format I can find of a particular document.
