Device: Nook simple touch
problem with software update for nook?

Yesterday I noticed that my nook glowlight plus had installed a software update. I then tried to sideload a book but noticed that Calibre was stuck on trying to "Get list of books on device" and I couldn't do anything.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Thanks.

Presumably the update degraded the performance of the MTP firmware on the device. You will need to wait for B&N to fix it -- there's not anything calibre can do about it.

If you dont mind losing everything on the device, you can try resetting it.

I'm debating just getting rid of the nook and going with a Kobo reader of some kind. I guess I need to open a support ticket with B&N.

I called B&N tech support and opened a support ticket. They promised to send it to a manager. I don't know how much traction a bug that doesn't effect your ability to buy books from them is really going to get.

Barnes and Noble chat support about 10 minutes ago:

Jayrhamae Rose: As a new roll out for the new software version of the NOOK. we would need to use an Adobe Digital Edition to transfer ePub files.
Me: Why?
Jayrhamae Rose: Please check this link to get the steps on how to transfer your ePub files: https://help.barnesandnoble.com/app/...owlight%20plus and https://help.barnesandnoble.com/app/...owlight%20plus
Me: Stand by
Jayrhamae Rose: The ADE application is the only compatible app that can transfer files to the GlowLight Plus.
Me: These are non-DRM ePubs.
Me: I can just drag them onto the nook
Me: And that works, if I do it one at a time
Me: Just can't do a lot at once.
Jayrhamae Rose: I understand. However, we updated the version of the NOOK and the only option to transfer ePub files is to use ADE application.
Me: Then the nook times out and disconnects from the PC
Me: That's not true. I can put a book on it right now without ADE.
Jayrhamae Rose: Kindly try the application that I suggested to rectify this.
Me: The application is only available for Windows and Mac. I use Linux.
Jayrhamae Rose: We highly recommend that you use ADE so that it won't damage the NOOK's software.
Me: And when did this requirement start?
Jayrhamae Rose: It started since we updated the software version as I've said earlier.
Me: Then your software is broken, because it still will let me copy books without using ADE
Me: How do I roll back to the older firmware
Jayrhamae Rose: Please note that we can still save files on the NOOK, but please be reminded that we will encounter some errors while doing this, just like what you are experiencing right now.
Jayrhamae Rose: We cannot down grade the NOOK.
Me: Then I am going to have to abandon the nook platform.
Me: Thank you, and have a good day.
Jayrhamae Rose: I'm glad I was able to assist you and thanks once again for joining the Barnes & Noble Chat.
Jayrhamae Rose: Take care!
Jayrhamae Rose has disconnected.

UPDATE!

The nook has to the have an Adobe Digital Editions ID added to the nook for sideloading to work. As soon as I added a new ADE ID to the nook, Calibre was able to complete it's scan of the nook.

Well, to resurrect an old thread, the problem is back. Calibre is now stuck on "getting list of books from device." Going on 5 minutes now. Tried it on Windows, tried it on my Linux laptop. This all started with the 4.5 nook software update.

When I swap my nook out under warranty, the new one works great, till it gets the 4.5 software update. Then this crap starts.

I'm not sure why adding an Adobe ID worked the last time, but with the new device, the Adobe ID no longer works to fix the issue.

I'm giving up on this device and regret the day I bought it.

Did some more experimenting this evening. Dragging and dropping files onto the nook from both Windows and Linux seems to work just fine. But as soon as I launch Calibre and it tries to connect to the device, it locks up Windows Explorer (or Nautilus on Linux) until I quit out of Calibre.

It's an mtp device. As far as I know, you can't format it. I'll give it a try when my wife is not using it.

Ah MTP. In that case try deleting the files calibre.driveinfo and metadata.calibre in the root of the device.

If that doesn't work, then the only remaining option is to reset the device.

Did that last night and it didn't help.

I reset the device about a half hour ago and added my Adobe DRM ID. Now Calibre seems to be happy. I use it once again to copy books onto the device.
