American Challenge: Revolution, A New Nation, and Western Expansion is an omnibus reprint edition of 4 tween-level historical novels by Susan Martins Miller, JoAnn A. Grote, Veda Boyd Jones, and Norma Jean Lutz, in the Sisters in Time series, based on significant events from 1770 to 1819 in US history, starring plucky young girls in the relevant day and age, free courtesy of Christian publisher Barbour Books.

In addition to introductions explaining the context of the times the stories are set in, there's also a reasonably substantial set of archaic word glossaries and brief explanations of key background historical figures and events, as well as timelines and such, meant as educational resources when reading.

Currently free @ B&N (may also drop in the UK), Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK), and Kobo (not available to Canadians). Likely to also drop later @ ChristianBook (DRM-free ePub available in certain countries), and may also be free at iTunes and/or Google Play in the US, where apparently the Barbour freebies sometimes also show up (but don't exist from a Canadian perspective, so I can't easily check).
