Hey folks. This morning I noticed the screen on my Kobo Aura One went completely dead. I hadn't read anything on it in a few weeks.
Tried turning it on, nothing happened. Pressed the On button longer, eventually the screen acted as if the system was rebooting -- those 5 little squares showed up on the screen and started loading, but after the second square fills up, the Kobo just turns itself off. Oh, and while plugged to power, that LED indicator square on the top right corner doesn't come on orange as before. I left it charging, imagining that perhaps the battery got drained, but I'm afraid it isn't the case. Googling turned up nothing. Are you guys familiar with this problem? I bought it less than 2 months ago ![]() |

Relax, deep breaths.
If by "Kobo turns itself off" you mean the screen goes completely black, it's a problem with the lastest forced push update bungle. It looks like a new version number is being pushed out now to get out from under all the corrupt files. If you're patient, and your Kobo auto-syncs, this might fix itself if you just leave it on tonight. (get it where the booting squares come up, but when the screen goes black, just leave it.). If you're not patient, or that doesn't work, you can force a factory reset: Power off completely, this might be hard to tell with the screen being all black. Connect the kobo to power, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. If going as planned, the indicator led will light up blue, then go to purple, red, and finally, the kobo will start a factory reset. Note that all books will have to be reloaded, and bookmarks will be lost. |

Yep mine is doing exactly the same today. It was definitely working just nothing showing on the screen. I may try grabbing the previous update tomorrow if it doesn't update itself overnight.

I believe you will need to do a factory reset to get the device to where it can upgrade.

I found it quite tricky to do the power off with the black screen. I didn't get the coloured lights with my Aura E2 while restoring, just a pause with no light, a flash, and then the restoring screen with the solid blue light. It's not downloading the correct update yet for me because I'm back to a black screen after seeing a factory reset start and attempting to update via wifi.
![]() Edit: Note thatI have an Aura 2, not Aura One. Wrong thread (apologies) but the reset instructions allowed me to roll back to the last version (the one with the new home screen), so thanks. Last edited by tea2; 05-19-2017 at 02:31 PM. |

I figured if I could just get the darn thing to connect via USB then I'd be able to update to the fixed firmware via Kobo desktop. Haven't had any luck guessing where the "connect" button is when I plug the reader in, though.

Damn forgot the USB wasn't automatic. And I guess factory reset auto updates you which doesn't exactly help.

The auto update might not get you the bad firmware it might get you the last 4.3 update or the first 4.4 update.
You can try and guess the location of the connect button. If you start from the right side of the device and move left you'll hit it. It's about an inch up and an inch over for the KA1 |

Good to hear.
![]() I don't suppose somebody could post a screenshot of the Aura One's screen when it is displaying the "connect via USB" message? That might be helpful for people who have blackscreen. Edit: Okay, so my reader just updated itself to 9349 without me having to fumble around for the button. Last edited by Braid; 05-19-2017 at 06:41 AM. |

I rolled back, and it's not pushing the new (apparently now fixed) update. Fine with me.
![]() Edit: Sorry--I'm speaking of my Aura 2nd ed again, not The One. ![]() Last edited by tea2; 05-19-2017 at 02:30 PM. |
