Question Win10 H2O cannot safely disconnect

In short, my Kobo Aura H2O will not safely disconnect from my Win10 laptop, unless I use One Weird Trick ;-)

If I open Calibre and have Calibre eject the device, the Kobo will eventually process the content and return to the home screen. If, however, I use the eject external devices from the win10 taskbar, the reader never registers the disconnection (even though neither windows nor calibre can see the device anymore) (I have left it in this state for more than an hour.)

If I unplug the device before processing, there will be a hd error next time I plug it in, scanning will reveal nothing but it'll suppress the error for subsequent connections.

Several months back, I didn't scan for the HD error and eventually suffered database corruption.

This has been occurring for at least 4 months, under several versions of Kobo firmware AND several updates to Win10.
I am currently running Win10 build 15063.138 (creators update)
and Nickle 4.3.8945

Any advice would be helpful.

**happens regardless of the USB port I use, USB2, and 3**

What I find on my Win10 laptop is much the same for Calibre and ejecting from the Safely Remove Hardware. However, if I open File Explorer, right click on the Kobo drive and then on eject, this seems to have the same effect as ejecting from Calibre though this might be dependent on the chipset. This has worked for me under Windows 10 for the release versions up to the current 15063.296 update and the Insider Preview builds up to 16188.

My advice: eject it using Calibre

For what it's worth, my Aura does the same thing when I connect it to my Win 10 machine at home or my Windows 7 machine at work.
