Unhappy [iOS] Disconnected from Calibre after 30 Seconds, Why?

I get connected to my iPad via wireless connection. Then CC says "Connected, Starting initial sync." Then, after about 30 seconds I get the message in the upper left-hand corner of the screen "Disconnected from Calibre." No books are shown.

What gives?

CC has a good refund policy.

But I suspect your network (device) configuration might be an issue.

There are LOTS of IOS versions in use without this issue.

Have you put the MAIN Calibre in debug mode to capture a LOG of what is happening?

Post that (Please wrap in [spoiler] tags)

Sorry, I have trouble keeping up with CC after it stopped being my main job a few months ago. As theducks wrote, if you post up the debug log from Calibre we might be able to find what's wrong. Also, you can email me a log from CC itself from the bottom of the settings menu.

Here is a log from Wireless Connection. I hope this is what you want. When trying the "Content Server" selection I can not get connected. This is on a 12" iPad Pro.

He wants a calibre debug log, not a calibre device detection log. See the calibre debug log section in our FAQ How do I get help? for instructions.

Also, and if you haven't already done it, send a debug log from CC.

I appreciate the advice you folks are providing. I really do! Please note I am a novice and though I've been using Calibre for some time I certainly don't know how to use all the features. I've found that going to the FAQs sometimes is very frustrating. From the advice above I cannot find how to create a Calibre debug log but do see how to email a log from CC. I have just done that. Again, thank you.

What I really want is list of titles and authors of the books I have in Calibre on my iPad. I don't need all the other info although Series would be nice too. I assumed (I know, assume nothing) that CC would provide this.

We've always had trouble striking the right balance between providing enough information to be useful to people when working out complicated problems, and making the answers short enough to be easy to read. What we've got is far from perfect but it's good enough most of the time.

Getting a Calibre debug log isn't hard. On my Mac, when starting Calibre, the option is in the "Preferences" menu at the top of the screen. I assume it's in a similar place on a PC. Once Calibre is restarted in debug mode, try to connect again. Then close Calibre and email me the file that gets opened up automatically.

I need to see the Calibre log since the CC log only tells half the story. What I can see in the log is that you've tried to connect a few times in both Wireless Device mode and Content Server mode. Most of the time, CC thinks it finds Calibre but then it doesn't manage to complete the connection. In more technical terms, CC sends a broadcast on your WiFi network, receives a response from a computer at IP address 192.168.0.8, and then nothing happens for 15 seconds after it tries to connect. The strange part is that it manages to get an answer of some kind, and then fails to connect. I know the post is long, but there's some advice in this FAQ page that might help: http://cc_faq.multipie.co.uk/index.p...d=7&artlang=en The more general FAQ on connections is here.

This is mostly what CC does. The "Wireless Device" method connects, and then lets you send in bulk your books from your computer to your iPad. Batches of no more than a few hundred at a time work best. Once the books are on your iPad, you can see more than just the titles and authors; the entire book is there so you can open it for reading. (Note that you'll need a separate Reader app. There are lots of good ones, and iBooks itself is passably good!)

"Content Server" is more of a way of browsing the books on Calibre without transferring them. It shows you a list of the books available and you can download them one at a time. This works better for a small number of books, or if you can connect to your computer without being physically in front of it.

The Command line tools:calibredb -list <options> (just a listing)
or
The create a Catalog (book) on the Convert menu (also has cover thumbnails)

Steve, I sent you a private message with the debug file.

Theducks, many thanks. As I said, not very proficient with Calibre. The Create Catalog from the arrow next to the Covert menu did the trick. Now have an eBook with all I want.

I would still like to see the original issue solved

I'm typing while walking so have to be brief: I'm confused about that debug log because it shows the connection working properly. Calibre connected to CC on "[your name]'s iPad mini 4". It then went through the expected startup synchronisation. I can only assume it worked this time, but not before. Did you change something or is your network just being intermittent? Remember, once you're connected as a wireless device, you send books by clicking buttons in Calibre on your computer.

No, I did not change anything but I suspect the problem may be with the network or security setting on my Windows 10 PC.

The Connect Device toolbar never shows up. While CC shows connected and is trying to connect (little wheel spinning) there is no change in Calibre on the PC. It does not switch to main menu number 2 - that normally shows when a device is connected. Send to Device icon is not shown. I am going to try to connect on another PC or perhaps you have some suggestion as to what network/security setting I should change?

Beyond what's in the FAQ, I don't have anything else to suggest. I've never seen a situation where Calibre's log shows a successful connection but where the user interface wouldn't update to give you the connected device options. This is perplexing!
