Aura One and Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary

I'm wondering about the poor quality of the existing English dictionary in the Aura One. I had hoped to simply go to the Kobo store and buy the Merriam-Webster Collegiate (available, for example, for the Kindle, which also offers excellent Oxford dictionary options). But the MW Collegiate doesn't seem to be available in the Kobo store.

Question: Am I right that some earlier Kobo models had the Merriam Webster Collegiate built in? If so, why would Kobo remove this dictionary in favor of the much weaker current offering? Word definitions and etymologies (the latter especially) are valuable to me for various reasons, and I really want to have a solid dictionary in any ereader I use.

Thanks for any thoughts on this. What would you folks consider to be the best English dictionary currently available for the Aura One?

You can add the Webster dictionary to your Kobo.

How to add custom dictionary see, here.

Chambers 1908 and Websters 1913:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=196925

More English dictionaries: Wiktionary, WordNet, GCIDE.

If you sync your device the dictionaries will delete, so to avoid that you have two options:
  • Patch the firmware and enable the patch `Change dicthtml strings to micthtml`.
  • To add a new dictionary on your device see here.

Edit: the Webster dictionary is not Merriam Webster, but Webster's Unabridged.

I realize that -- and I do thank you for the links -- but this is the 1913 Webster's, a fine dictionary, to be sure, but I'd prefer the MW Collegiate. Am I right that this was available on earlier Kobo models?

If there was another English dictionary on Kobo devices, it was a long time ago. For all my memory, they have used the same dictionary. I think I worked out it was the free electronic version from Merriam-Webster, but the last time I looked was a few years ago.

Pack english dictionaries in kobo format:

EDIT: I have been warned that there are dictionaries with rights. I delete the link. Apologies.

Thank you Surquizu. Which do you like best? The Oxford 2nd edition is much bigger than the others, but I couldn't find how old it is.

FWIW I remember trying that 200mb+ version a few years ago. It was so slow to open the dictionary pop-up when selected that I decided it was totally impractical. Also for words with multiple usage it was quite common to find the dictionary widget needed 500+ 'pages' to swipe through the whole definition

I'm all in favour of 'better' dictionaries, but this one was a step too far for me.

I hear you. I have the Littré as an alternative French dictionary, which I renamed as Portuguese in the devices. It can go to a 2 digit number of pages, is a pleasure to browse through sometimes, but hundreds of pages would definitely be too much. It is only 36 Mb, so opens as quickly as the other dictionaries.
