Missing Device Driver

Have no idea how it happened, since the device drive software should just "be there" but for whatever reason, I cannot get one of my Kindles to be recognized. I plug it in and nothing....no "attempting to install", no sound indicating the device was plugged in...

I can still get the books from the cloud, but I can no longer access the device from my computer.

troubleshooting...made sure I used a "Kindle" usb cable. Confirmed that other Kindles would connect. Attempted to connect to different USB ports on different computers...reset, restart, de-registered, re-registered...

It's dead to everything except wifi. I also checked to see if there was an option to update the software, but it's always greyed out.

any suggestions?

Are you still able to charge it over USB?

Rebooting both PC and Kindle is a good thing to try when odd stuff happens.

ETA: Since it looks like you covered that in the first post (I need to read more betterer), the next most likely thing is failed USB hardware on the Kindle.
