Ereader recommendation?
I'm looking for a new eReader. I had a Kobo Aura H2O that I really liked, but the screen substrate broke under what I would consider fairly normal use, certainly nothing abusive. So I feel like going another direction.
What I need: - Decent epub/PDF/DJVU support and connectivity to Calibre (even if it requires alternate software/firmware. I can install that, it's not an issue. I have experience w/ Koreader, and I'm willing to use that again if needed.) - As durable as a cellphone/tablet. I've treated my cellphone and iPad far more roughly that I did my Kobo, and they don't even have scratches. Baring that, having a nice protective case available that has some sort of screen protection. - 8" screen size, with a decent screen. The screen quality should be good, but if it's a generation back in quality, it's not a dealbreaker. - Expandable storage What would be nice, but is not necessarily a dealbreaker: - Warranty support in the USA - Waterproof - Sub $225 pricetag I've been leaning toward toward the Pocketbook Inkpad 2, but I'm still interested in exploring other options if they might meet my needs better. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

Keep in mind that pretty much any eInk device is going to have a screen constructed the same way as the Kobo. There is a very thin glass substrate backpane to them and they are in no way going to be as durable as a cellphone or tablet.

I'll 2nd what AnemicOak said. There is no* e-ink reader that is going to be anywhere near as sturdy as your cell phone or tablet screen. I don't think there is much difference between brands on this, but Amazon are more likely to give a discount or replacement based on a broken screen even though their warranty doesn't cover it.
IMHO most cases are useless from an e-ink screen protection perspective since it seems to be twisting/bending that's the big killer and if you can flex the case it's not preventing much. I use a wood case if I'm traveling with my e-ink for that reason and I've never used a case during use (and never broke a screen). *- I can't remember if there are any current small players that are using a flexible screen technology, but it's virtually non-existent Last edited by robko; 12-16-2016 at 05:57 PM. |

OK, assuming there's not much chance of improving durability beyond just taking extra care of the device, would the Inkpad 2 meet my other needs? I'm prepared to pull the trigger after the first of the year if that's the best one for me.

I suggest that you not ask us which is the best one for you to buy. We can give you information on various devices but we don't know you and any advice we give about what will best fit you is likely to just reflect our own prejudices.
Study what's available. Ask questions till you have a good understanding of the options and then make up your mind which fits you best. Or else!! ![]() Barry |

I just killed a Tolino HD3 sitting in the pouch of an airplane seat with me knees. I also think all ereaders are made of the same kind of eggshells - so if you were happy with the Kobo I would switch over to the Aura One - seems a great device to me. I will do so as soon as they are available again in Europe.
