Tethering iPad Pro to a smartphone

I bought an iPad Pro Wi-Fi. If I buy a smartphone and use it to tether to my iPad to use the internet while no Wi-Fi hotspot is available, how fast the connection can I expect?

Would it be as fast as using the phone alone to browse the web?

Would the phone battery drained quicker under such circumstances than under using the phone alone to browse the web?

I tether my Ipad air2 to my Iphone 5s while I am out from the house as I do not trust or use open hot spots. I find that he speed on my Ipad is just about the same as the speed of my phone. Yes I believe there is a little more battery drain but it is not bad. I have never had my phone of Ipad battery go down that low. I would say if I had a large screen Iphone I more than likely would be just using my Iphone and only tether when it need a larger screen. But to be honest I do not like the large Iphone and I much prefer my 4 inch screen for what I do.

Does your carrier charge extra for tethering? How much data do you use per month while out from your house? I am asking because Verizon has 35 dollars for unlimited talk, text and up to 2GB data per month. Do you think 2GB is enough for checking my email, reading news website and browsing Wikipedia?

I am not away from home that much but I will say that 5 days and 4 nights of use while on a camping trip used for me an my wife about 3 gigs. I had my iphone and ipad. My wife has a android phone and also a windows 10 laptop. Now we were not on line all day and evening but did check bank accounts, and used google maps and of course email and facebook.

I am quite sure that your provider can't detect that you are tethering. How should they detect that the bytes they deliver to your phone is retransmitted to your iPad?

As for speeds I tested my iPhone 6S and my provider delivered 99/30 (down/up) to the phone. Tethered devices, iPad Pro and iPad mini showed 33/17.

I use 2-3 GB a month for about the same purposes as you do. But my iPad pro has its own sim-card and is mostly not on my home WiFi so I think that 2 GB will be enough.

I have 15 hours talk and 25 GB data a month. (Appr. 20 $ )

I will also recommend that you install a data counter on your phone. I use Data Counter- Universal Data... from Slybees. Recommended

I know that mine can detect it somehow as they charge extra for it on certain plans and if your plan doesn't have tethering included the phone warns you about needing to enable it on your account for an extra fee (or to switch to a plan that includes it).

My cell phone plan gives me 16GB a month and I can tether without any extra charge.
