backup/synchronization private books
I'm a complete newbie on these ereader things, but I'm hooked and love my reader. So bare with me regarding perhaps some newbie questions...
How do you guys backup/synchronize your annotations, markups etc you've made in a book you didn't buy from Kobo? Since Kobo doesn't allow you to backup/synchronize through the Kobo cloud or app on computer. I don't want to loose all annotations or markups if the reader crashes or I would have to make a factory reset. Or if I just would like to synchronize/put the books on another reader/phone/tablet etc. Or to a backup harddisk. And how are the annotions, markups etc actually stored on the reader, in the book itself or a separate file? I've read something about synchronizing through Calibre with a specific kobo plug in, but didn't understand exactly how it works Or does the annotations, markups follow the book, if I just copy the book from the reader and replace the original one on the computer? The short answer is that there isn't good backup method for annotations.
For the long answer, I suggest searching the forum. This has been discussed plenty of times here. If you search for post by me with the word "annotations" in it, then you should find the discussions. |

Thanks, yes you're right. There are som e threads about. Just being a bit lazy this time and a bit tired of feeling a bit locked in, even though the Kobo seems to be the most open and IMHO very nice reader. Just been a bit of a change going from phone/tablet OS.
I found one of your answers: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...or+annotations IF it's not possible to get the high lights, annotations written to the book itself, I kind of liked the idea of getting it written to the sideloaded metatextfile. just want it to be simple enough to do. I generally just highlight new words/phrases and surrounding contexts when I read Spanish books. And I would like to save them in an easy way. Sometimes I also highlight interesting phrases in other books as well. So basically I so far seem to more use the highlight feature more Thanks again |

That's probably the last time I wrote the full details like that. And looking at it, I missed a tool. There is also the Annotation Exporter by Toxaris. It has an option to create a HTML file for each book with annotations, so it might be closest to what you want.
Also, I don't think any of these methods really care if there is a note attached to the hightlighted text in book. The database table used for bookmarks, highlights and annotations is the same. The differences are the columns filled in. All the methods pull the full details and format the output as appropriate. |
