Change default book cover on PW2?

Hi there.

Am using a PW2 on 5.6.5 firmware. I have jailbroken my kindle and got a system dump. While I check .jar assets, pngs, jpgs, I couldn't find one used as a default cover image for no-image books on my homescreen.(ss01.png is too large!)

Anyone know which file to modify/replace?

Or where home.jar is?
Update: I checked all image formats in sys partition and found no cover images. Just screensaver and UI elements. I had a quick look on home.jar but found nothing. I am still looking for home-assets.jar.

I am also desperate to remove the useless and annoying 'personal' lable.

update: Thanks to the modern firmware 5.7.2. No more annoying labels.
I found all the covers in app_utilities-assets.jar.

The last problem is ,How do I properly replace images or even js inside the jar and resign the jar to be used by kindle? Do I need to generate my own keys for that?

K5 or PW2 ?
The thread title is "K5" but you write about a PW-2.

It's a PW2. With latest firmware.

The firmware on the K5 is 5.3.7.2
It is totally different from the Paperwhite.
The K4 is 4.1.3.

As pointed out in the post above, the K5 firmware has not been updated for a very long time.

Ah, this is a technical forum, of course the knowing the model makes a difference.

You don't mention looking inside of the loop mounted, cramfs, file systems.
Try looking in those.
to find where they are at, enter:

cat /proc/mounts

The 'personal" label is easy to get rid of. Just make sure all books have a cdetype=EBOK and/or a valid exth 113 (ASIN).
calibre can do that for free, with the right options.

Sorry for missing your post, been traveling outside for days.
What I want to do is to change the default cover for books that doesn't have a cover.(That is the 'alphabet picture'

I know calibre can do that. But all my books are sent to me as personal documents through ebook websites. In this way I cannot modify the cover(It's in Cloud Drive).

What I want is to change default background and remove 'personal' label by modifying system files. Just like what I do on Android (decompiling the apk(jar)). Thank you for your patience.

Then you are spelunking in unexplored territory, I believe.

Personally, I would just copy the ebook from my Kindle, put it into calibre, set the cover and cdetype and resend it to my Kindle via USB.

I kind of prefer managing books via calibre rather than through Amazon's cloud, it lets me fix all my niggling metadata issues.

Yes, I know some people are more privacy-conscious than I am.

I'd be okay with Amazon seeing my PDOCs, but on a utilitarian level calibre is still easier -- plus I hate the unsightly "Personal" banner.


To me, utility is the killer feature, and I can be forgiving of privacy in exchange... assuming they (Amazon PDOC) are offering utility, which to me they aren't!

That is a "good to know".

The full path is /opt/amazon/ebook/lib/app_utilities-assets.jar
