Remove Books From Kindle to iMac

Hi,

I have just joined this forum as I am now the owner of an eink Kindle - I have heard it called a Kindle 4 as well.

The issue is that I was given the Kindle from a friend and it still has some of the books he had purchased on it. What I want to do, if possible, is to remove the books from the Kindle and store them on my iMac and start collecting my own ebooks on the Kindle.

I suppose it is a sort of re-boot but without losing the books forever.

I have installed Calibre on my iMac but cannot find a way of storing the books on the iMac but not on the Kindle.

Any helpful suggestions gratefully received.

The books probably have DRM, which will lock them to the device they were downloaded to. If your friend bought the books from Amazon, he violated the TOS by giving you the books.

I think tyroreader is concerned that the books that were on the device will disappear if he/she registers it to a different account, and just wants to have a backup just in case (let's assume for sake of simplicity, without stripping DRM). That's certainly not a problem, and you don't need calibre for that: just copy the /documents folder.

But the books that are on the Kindle should remain readable, even after it is registered to a different account. I don't have the Kindle model in question, but I believe that is how all of them work (and have exercised this scenario myself, once).

Hi, thank you both for the replies.

Perhaps I might make it clearer. I currently have books on the kindle which are not my "cup of tea" and want to remove them from the Kindle and put them on my iMac for possible future use. Some I will definitely want to read so do not wish to just delete them.

That way I can start with a fresh clean Kindle and start to build up my library.

How do I go about that through either the Kindle itself or with Calibre?

The books do not belong to you.
Must ask if they aren't your cup of tea, what possible use could you have for them?

Now I noticed when I bought my used kindles, most of the books were the freebies. I just deleted them.
I have never heard of anyone taking books off a kindle and putting them on a computer.
