Devil's Peak by South African novelist Deon Meyer (SYKM, Wikipedia) is the 1st in his award-winning Benny Griessel series of mystery/crime thrillers set in South Africa, starring the eponymous police inspector in Capetown, this installment the one setting up his initial return to form from the obligatory downward spiral of his life as he gets caught up in solving a case involving a former freedom fighter turned vigilante killer in the wake of a terrible loss, free courtesy of publisher Hodder & Stoughton, who are printing it in English translation from its original publication as Infanta in Afrikaans.
This is the featured Free Book of the Week in the iTunes UK store. Currently free, probably just for the next week @ B&N UK, Amazon UK, iTunes UK, & Kobo (available to the UK, but apparently not other regional stores I spot-checked, including Ireland which usually also gets the UK freebies when EU/Oceania/the rest of the world doesn't, but YMMV), and probably also Google Play UK. And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Because it's always nice to get more titles in translation from around the world, and even though I'm not really into cops vs killer thrillers, this does look like it takes place in an interesting international setting, and it's from an award-winning series by a worldwide bestselling major author in the subgenre, so extra bonus points. ![]() Enjoy! Description Soldiers never find it easy returning from war. So it is with Thobela Mpayipheli, former freedom fighter, trying to settle back into the new South Africa. But at least he has his boy, an adored companion who is a link to a happier past. Then the boy is taken from Thobela, one of a staggering number of children murdered or abused in South Africa, and Thobela knows only despair...and a cold desire for revenge. Thus is born the vigilante killer known as 'Artemis'. The police respond by putting on the case a man who can't afford to fail. Benny Griessel is on the brink of losing everything -- his job, his family, his self-respect -- and this could be his last chance to drag his life back out of the gutter. And then Benny meets Christine, a young mother working as a prostitute in Cape Town. And something happens that is so frightening, the world can never be the same again, for Benny, for Christine, or for Thobela. Last edited by ATDrake; 01-11-2016 at 03:43 PM. |
