Recipes fail on Xubuntu

Hi all. I am new to this forum and strictly non technical so please bear with me if my protocol is suspect.

I have been running Calibre on Ubuntu for a number of years to download the Telegraph.co.uk in mobi format without any problems. However since changing my OS to Xubuntu the recipe has consistently failed at the same point. I have tried the recipes for the Independent and Daily Mail and these also fail at the same point. I've also tried them on my wife's laptop which also runs Xubuntu and the problem is the same. However they still run OK on my old Ubuntu netbook. This looks as though it may be a Xubuntu problem, but if someone could let me know what errno 32 signifies, or can provide any other info, it may help if I have to raise the issue with the Xubuntu community.

The last few lines on the log are:

Try deleting your ~/.ICEauthority file. (A similar error appears in various places on the internet, and the usual solution is to delete that file. All it has is a session cookie, and it will regenerate itself.)

P.S. Your calibre is 20 months out of date. You might want to install the latest version of calibre from the calibre website.

Recipes fail on Xubuntu

Eschwarz, thank you for your prompt reply. Your suggestion has fixed the problem.

BTW, the version of Calibre that I'm running is a recent download from the Ubuntu Software Centre which is obviously not up to date. I will try a download from the Calibre site.

Many thanks.

Yes, I recognize v1.25 by now...

One of the flaws with Ubuntu is that they periodically "freeze" the OS and no longer update applications unless they are security fixes. Well, I am a daring person I run ArchLinux and most things are updated the day they get released.
It depends which version of (X)Ubuntu you have, and I would guess you are running the LTS release -- Trusty Tahr.

...

You're welcome.

I've seen similar issues with FileZilla and 14.x based repos. Moving to 15.x based usually allows upgrades to newer versions but not sure if this is your issue here too.

No, the issue was a corrupted ICEauthority. It can happen on any version of Ubuntu, I am pretty sure.

Mentioning the age of the distro package was a free and unrelated extra, because calibre moves fast and many things have changed in the 2 years since Ubuntu last updated calibre on 14.x
That's why the distro version is officially unrecommended -- even 15.10 has v2.35.0 packaged 4 months ago, and currently 10 releases behind.
Don't worry, Xenial just updated from there to v2.45.0 about an hour ago. But that is their unstable development version.
