PDOCs and EBOKs and Fires, oh my!

I use Calibre on a pretty regular basis, but what I'm asking for is not about using Calibre but about its magic voodoo. What I'm looking to do is run a MOBI file through a script that will ensure that it appears in the Books library of a Kindle Fire instead of the dreaded Docs folder.

When I convert MOBI -> MOBI with Calibre (using ebook-convert), it works. However, I assume Calibre is also doing a lot of fiddling with the file in the background, which is something I want to avoid. I don't want to change the contents of the MOBI at all. All I'm looking to do is modify the meta data to appease the Kindle gods.

I'm using mobi2mobi to do this, but no matter how hard I try, I can't get the books to show up in the Books library. From viewing the meta data of the files, I'm adding the same fields Calibre adds, but I must be missing something. I just can't see it.

What magic does Calibre do that makes the files show up in the right place?

But the books still don't show up under the Books library. So, there's something I'm missing here that Calibre gets right, and I'm trying to figure out what it is.

What I found that works for me is to install the "Quality Check" plugin. Right click on the book, choose Quality Check->Fix->Fix ASIN for Kindle Fire. Seems to work every time.
