Related, there is also the 'Open With' plug in. I find it very convient to open selected Calibre books in different formats and/or in different programs

Do you mean associating filetypes from Windows so they open in calibre?

calibre automatically registers filetype associations on Windows 8 and above.
You can manually associate them on Windows 7 by entering the following into a command prompt:
Code:
calibre-debug --default-programs=register
Note that this will automatically set calibre as the default for filetype that does not yet have a default -- this may not be desired, since calibre handles a variety of files including DOC/DOCX/ZIP/RAR/TXT/HTML/PDF.

The BIG question is what you want to accomplish by setting the Windows (default) Action for a file type.

Setting it to Calibre.exe adds the book to the Library

Setting it to E-book viewer.exe opens the book in calibre's book viewer

Setting it to Edit E-book.exe opens the book in calibre's book editor (EPUB and AZW3 only)
