Viewing Two Libraries Simultaneously
@magphil,
Yes, but you won't be able to edit or drill down on the books in the second library, because it will not be the Calibre Main GUI of the second library that you will be viewing. Use the MultiColumnSearch plugin in "Search Another Calibre Library [All Books]" mode. What you will see will be similar to Page 3 in the MCS User Guide image attached below, but based on your 'real' custom columns that you specify in your search criteria. You will still be in the first library where you execute MCS, but an additional dialog will appear with all of the books in the other library that you selected that match your search criteria. That is what Page 3 shows. Set the parameters such that 'everything' gets selected. Since you may specify up to 4 different custom columns within your search criteria, you can obtain results with up to 4 different custom columns, plus all of the 'standard' columns, per single search. You can run the same search again with up to 4 different custom columns, and get another set of results that can be used simultaneously with the first set of up to 4. And so on. You can also copy the second library's results to the Clipboard and save them to a spreadsheet. They are copied as 'tab-delimited', and paste nicely into a spreadsheet with the formatting preserved. Just select 'paste special' and 'tab-delimited' to do so. You could then do a 'Quick Switch' to the second Calibre library, then search the first one like you did the second one. Save the results from that search into the same spreadsheet, and you will have a consolidated spreadsheet for all of your libraries with all of the 'standard' columns plus whatever number of custom columns that you chose as your search criteria. What I just described above was my original vision of MCS. DaltonST |

Thanks for these tips. It's better than nothing ;-)
I'd like to merge to libraries, but many books are common, so sorting by author on both screen and copy to library was my best choice of avoiding looking for dups afterwards. I guess this could be done at the spreadsheet level. |

It will find duplicates (based on author and title matching) between two libraries (e.g. LIBA and LIBB). After running it you can move the non-duplicates (unmarked books) from LIBA to LIBB. The books that you're left with in LIBA are the duplicates. How you deal with them is up to you. To make a decision as to which one to keep, I would look at them side by side in the viewer, and if it appears that the book needs editing then side by side in the editor - keeping the one I consider to be 'best'. @magphil - To continue from @BetterRed's suggestion you could move/copy all of the duplicate files from both libraries into a third temporary library in order to then compare them and keep only the ones you want. Then move the results back into the final library. I do recommend doing a backup of both libraries first and making sure that the Add Books preferences are set to allow duplicates and not merge books.
