Downgrade Kindle Paperwhite from 5.6.5 to previous version

Hi everybody! I’ve just updated my PW2 to 5.6.5 firmware version. To say I’m disappointed is to say nothing. I read mainly foreign literature and that’s why I use the word translation almost with every book including technical literature. This is the primary feature for me. After the update the popup window with word’s meaning looks just terrible. The first thing is that they’ve truncated the popup window area. Now the window can show only 8 rows from the dictionary. The previous version was 50% higher. The second is that they disabled the ability to open dictionary in case when selected word was not found in the dictionary. Sometimes it is useful to open the dictionary manually in case when the software didn't manage to find the translation automatically. For example in case of verbs that are used in simple past tense or for separable verbs in German. So, is there any way to rollback the firmware update from 5.6.5 to previous version? Because I cry every time I look at new translation popup. Maybe, there is also an email address I can use to write to Kindle development team to ask they at least return the ability to open dictionary manually? |

On fw 5.6.5 you have "Open Dictionary" option when you tap on 3 dots icon, last icon on the Highlight/Note/Share/Search floating bar.

Yes, I know. I can use it when the translation was found. But it is disabled (greyed) when the dictionary didn't find matches. So, in this case I need to get to the Home screen, then find a collection with dictionaries, which is placed at the very end of the book list (and that means I need to page a lot) and only then I reach my dictionary. Although I keep my books sorted by "Recent" I have to page to the end, because dictionaries are always kept at the end. So there is no a 'simple' way to get to the dictionary. |

Highlight just another simple word near by, so you can open the dictionary without going to homepage.

By the way, I tried to do so and it doesn't work for me. There is no 'Dictionary' option but 'Dictionary and Wikipedia'. And it works different. It opens not the dictionary itself but only one article with translation. So it's not what I want. What is even worse, to open i.e. German dictionary instead of English one, I need to take care about what keyboard language is selected. Otherwise it opens wrong dictionary. But that is only the half of the problem for me. The translation popup window still looks awful. I really don't understand why did they change the translation feature. It was almost perfect before, and that for such a long period of time! And now these 'paged' popups... I loved my Kindle, it's the third one I bought. But now I'm starting to hate it. Besides, I've bought PW2 because of it's translation feature, which is totally different now. May I demand my money back? May be there is some way to roll back the firmware update or jailbreak and roll back? Is there any support email from amazon I can write a feedback or something? |

My Items (returns books with authors or titles matching the search string) Kindle Store Text in Books (matches the search text anywhere inside a book) Dictionary Wikipedia If I select "Dictionary" it opens the dictionary to the entry for the entered search string.

I have 5.6.5 (2730300038). Kindle Paperwhite (2nd gen). When I do a search I have: My Items Kindle Store Coodreads Text in Books Dictionary and Wikipedia When I touch the last one it opens full screen window with two tabs: 1) Dictionary, 2) Wikipedia. At the bottom there is also additional 'Open Dictionary' option. When I use it, it opens a dictionary to the beginning not to the entry. |

How very strange. The same version of firmware normally behaves identically on different devices. I wonder if it's perhaps because you also have "Goodreads" there, which I don't? (It's not available to people outside the U.S.) Is it possible to turn it off and see if that gives you the same search results screen that I see? Last edited by HarryT; 09-02-2015 at 12:56 PM. |

I think Harry's right--it probably has to do with the "Goodreads" availability. If "Goodreads" is available, it takes up space, so that Dictionary and Wikepedia are combined as an option. Unfortunately, I don't believe there is any way to disable the "Goodreads" link. I've never used or set up Goodreads on any of my Kindles, but the option is there--and as far as I can tell, no way to disable it.

Yes, it appears to be related to the Goodreads entry. But, when I use 'Open Dictionary' option, it opens the full dictionary to the *entry*, not the beginning. I need to use 'Goto' to get to the beginning of the dictionary.
