ToC fine on Calibre but not on Kobo Glo HD
Hi guys,
I recently got the Glo HD and I have been using Calibre to manage my library. I have a book which is a collection of books. The ToC works fine on Calibre, both the copy on my hd and also the copy on my Kobo. But when I open the book on the Kobo I don't see the ToC. Which is a big problem when you are talking about 1700 pages. What could be the problem since it works fine on Calibre? Thanks! |

It's not a solution (sorry), but you might try using Sigil which is a free epub editing tool. I use it to fix TOCs, and find it much better than Calibre.
Once in there you can edit the TOC directly, generate a new one, and even do an overall epub validation (Tools menu). That returns a number of cryptic messages, but it might give you a pointer. |

What happens when you try to open the ToC on the Glo HD? Is it empty or do you get an error?
How big is the file and how big is the ToC? There was a bug reported recently with a large book that had a lot of ToC entries. It appears there is an issue with this in the recent firmware. But, in this case, the book wouldn't open at all and there was an error displayed. That problem has been reported to Kobo and hopefully will be fixed in the next firmware. For yours, it might be an error in the ToC. The calibre viewer is a lot more forgiving of errors in an epub than the Kobo firmware. So, IanD's suggestion of regenerating the ToC using Sigil or calibre is a good idea. After doing this, the ToC will definitely be correct. If you do this, make sure you delete the book from the device before resending it. This is to remove details of the book, including the ToC, from the internal database. |

Thanks for the suggestion guys.
When I open the book I simply get no ToC. The book opens fine but the ToC is gone. It's a collection of books, so, the ToC has 2 levels (1 for books and 1 for chapters within those books). Could that be the problem? That the kobo can't deal with the 2 levels? |

Won't be the 2-level thing. I've got loads of books with 2 - they all work.
What's the file format? |

This might be a silly suggestion, but I've seen a few odd books where the TOC is shown correctly in Calibre and other readers at the front of the book, but on the ereader itself the TOC ends up at the end of the book. Did you check if it's possibly there stuck towards the last few pages? I think it happens when the pages are in an odd order in the .ncx or .opf pages.

Another silly question...
When you're referring to the "Table of Contents", are you talking about the one you get when you open the menu and tap the <-> icon? Or are you talking about the one that appears at the start or end of the book? |

It's epub.
And I don't see any ToC, either at the beginning, the end or at the <-> icon. It's simply gone. I'm really not sure about what to do. I could do the ToC manually but that would be a lot of work, it would just be easier to have all the books separately. But that is not exactly a fix for the problem... |

Hmm, then manually regenerating it seems the best way forward, using Calibre or Sigil.
It's fairly straightforward in Sigil. Open the file, click the menu button and if you're lucky, the menu generates itself. If not, then you can stick <h> tags on the lines you want to be headers, then use the menu again. In Calibre, I seem to remember there's a way to generate ToCs when format-shifting, or indeed converting epub to epub for that matter. The output options give you some control over it, and more so if you do a bit of research on how that particular dialog works. I'd still recommend opening the file in Sigil, and running a validation check though. You never know - maybe it's something simple broken in the files which you can easily fix. |

If the book is an omnibus, then splitting it is a good idea. The simplest way to do this is with the ePubSplit plugin in calibre. That allows you to select what parts of the omnibus gets put into a new book. |

Hey guys,
Sorry it took me so long to reply, I was aways the last days. So, I ran the checker and I get many errors related to fonts, which do not seem to be a problem when using the Kobo but nothing about the ToC. I have uploaded the book here, it's the complete Sherlock Holmes series, it is public domain. https://mega.co.nz/#F!G1sxWZbQ!AQGoNWpYg9VVPz1neziWCg |

I don't get any TOC at all when opening it up in Calibre's viewer. Opening it up in Sigil doesn't show any TOC page either. Did you upload an edited copy by chance?
I was easily able to create the html TOC though in Sigil, and that does work perfectly on the Glo HD. Edit: I also got no errors when running the check in Sigil, which is another reason I thought a wrong copy might have been uploaded? Last edited by Ripplinger; 07-13-2015 at 09:11 AM. |

Really? That's very strange.
That is the only file I have. Here's what I see when I open it: https://mega.co.nz/#!mgUShLZS!jO4tEk...B9I4_HsyRM4xkI |

The problem is with the headers of the Toc (cano.ncx file inside this epub). I haven't figured out exactly what is technically wrong with it yet, but the following changes fixex it.
Delete the line: <!DOCTYPE ncx PUBLIC "-//NISO//DTD ncx 2005-1//EN" "http://www.daisy.org/z3986/2005/ncx-2005-1.dtd"> Replace the next line with: <ncx xmlns="http://www.daisy.org/z3986/2005/ncx/" version="2005-1" xml:lang="en"> Edit: Actually, just adding the missing xmlns="http://www.daisy.org/z3986/2005/ncx/" to the <ncx> element is what's needed to fix this book. Edit 2: The really gory details: http://www.idpf.org/epub/20/spec/OPF...Section2.4.1.2 Last edited by rashkae; 07-13-2015 at 10:57 AM. |
