New H2O - Format Disc error with Calibre
Hi
I just got my replacement H20 and as soon as I conect it to Calibre its says I need to Format the Disc. Anyone know what this means? All i've done so far is a first sync where it loaded a handful of books. |

Just to say the Kobo Desktop gives the same error message too. I'm on the latest version for both that and Calibre.
I rang Kobo and they suggested a factory reset which hasn't changed anything so they told me to get a replacement. |

as you know a replacement is there for the taking, you could indulge your curiosity and see what happens if you accept the suggestion & tell windows to format the disc

I was tempted to try and install the latest firmware but I didn't want to bugger up my chances of getting a replacement or refund from Argos so I figured I'd be better off asking for a replacement than mucking around myself and voiding my right to a refund/replacement. |

If you install the latest firmware and are still out of luck, you need only do a factory reset to return it to it's original state. There should be no risk.

Have you seen this thread? I haven't read it all but remembered I had seen someone with the same (or similar problem).

Actually I just realised I can't as I would need to be able to click into the Kobo folder in order to add the new update. And I can't as the moment I click on the folder I get the format disc message. Right now I can't do a thing with it other than download books I've bought via kobo via wifi. I've no access at all via Pc.

That is terrible. Yes you will need to have it replaced. Can you take it in today and exchange it? Third time's bound to be good, right?

I would suggest doing a factory reset. There can be occasions where the device seems OK, the PC sees the drive as corrupt and needs it formatted. A factory reset will usually fix this. But, if it doesn't, it probably means a problem with the internal memory and you should get the device replaced.

I ran into one Glo where it kept giving a format needed error on several computers. Since it was new, we finally did the requested format without the quick format option so the whole partition was overwritten. After that completed, we disconnect and did a factory reset to restore the contents of the partition. Been a while now and still working okay.

i agree with all the folk saying get it replaced.
but so that we understand. the area that windows says is corrupt is the area where kobo stores the books & the database stuff. the firmware is on a different partition? and is also in a protected area on the device from where it it restored at factory reset ? so 1> formatting the drive followed by factory reset is a possible repair route, valid say for an out of warranty device. Sometimes when a drive is formatted and disc-checked, the bad sectors are flagged & the rest of the drive is useable. 2> it is likely that there IS drive corruption ( windows does not usually lie about these things) but its not yet affecting the part of the drive which Kobo is currently using, because the OP can still download & read books ? 3> any such drive shoudl be formatted to what - FAT32 ? or NTFS ? |
