Calibre (and computer) no longer recognizes ereader

Calibre used to detect my Sony PRS300 but it no longer does. (Either does my Xubunut computer.) I ran
Code:
dmesg

Then followoing the Calibre manual I ran these commands and got this:

gregg@LG:~/Desktop$ grep SYSFS_DEPRECATED /boot/config-`uname -r`
# CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED is not set
gregg@LG:~/Desktop$ grep CONFIG_SCSI_MULTI_LUN /boot/config-`uname -r`
gregg@LG:~/Desktop$ ^C

Not real technical here and didn't know how to interpret this stuff. The ereader is stuck on "Opening Book." I'm just wondering if there's anything I can try of if I should pitch it.

Thanks.

New info: To my shock the computer recognized the ereader. But it would not let me add books. I could add them outside the database file but not within. At first when I tried to even open the folders, the folders would get lock icons on them. Then I managed to get into the Books folder (where the books should be) and when I went to paste a book there I got this screenshot.(38)

Well, Ubuntu was kind enough to recognize your device (idVendor 054c is Sony).
What happens next I am not sure.
But once you have access to your Sony, try to delete everything in the folder books (of each medium, there is one on the internal memory, another one on the microSD card etc.). Leave everything else alone.
Restart the Sony.

I am not sure why your Linux doesn't like the filename of the ePub.

BTW - isn't this (or shouldn't be this) the same thread as before?

Thanks Ghitulescu. There is nothing on the Sony. There's a new development too. After I disconnected the Sony from the computer it was stuck (and I had added two ebooks outside the database) in the loading mode. So I let it be for two hours. Still stuck so I did a hard re-set. And it took me to the re-set page, then wouldn't let me complete the re-set. (I think this thing was designed to mess with me.)

And you're right about the thread. I guess I was thinking that somebody told me I'd have a better chance of getting it to work if Calibre detected it and since the Sony forum people for the most part didn't seem to have any suggestions I'd try here.

Sounds to me like the ereader memory is failing horribly. Are you sure it isn't just broken? (You do seem to have had a lot of issues with it...)

No, there's HOPE! It was stuck on "Opening Page" then it was stuck on "Loading Book" then I hooked it up to the computer and on the ereader it said "Invalid Format" and there was a big warning exclamation mark in the middle of the screen!! (I'm psyched! LOL) So I then I ran into this:

https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answer...2-digital-book.

Did what it said and it put the reader through something like 'formatting internal format.' I let it do its thing and in less than a minute the ereader looked frickin' NORMAL!!!! OMG. So I of course hooked it back up to the computer and tried to put some books on it. I figured copying and pasting and dragging and dropping were safer than Calibre, so that's what I did and via both processes I got the same error (see screenshot). And I also noticed that the Books folder in the ereader was missing.

But this seems overcome-able, does it not?

What do you guys think I should do next? How to get over the 'read only' objection. (And remember, earlier I got the lock icons on all the files so that was basicallyl the 'read only' thing as well.)

We're close. I can smell victory on this!! LOL

I could've tried Calibre but was chicken. And figured I'd ask if there was something else that needed to be done first.

To the calibre manual we go.
My device is getting mounted read-only in linux, so calibre cannot connect to it?

Can you please give me the exact command in a code thingie (so I can copy and paste it). That would be awesome.

Here's the Calibre advice again:

My device is getting mounted read-only in linux, so calibre cannot connect to it?

Linux kernels mount devices read-only when their filesystems have errors. You can repair the filesystem with:

sudo fsck.vfat -y /dev/sdc

Replace /dev/sdc with the path to the device node of your device. You can find the device node of your device, which will always be under /dev by examining the output of:

mount

THANKS!

And after I run the command, it should restore the "Books" folder, right? Then I was going to just copy and paste a couple of small-ish epubs into that selfsame Books folder because that seemed the safest way to go. Or I could go the Calibre route. Which do you think is safer?

Your sony looks like it is mounted as /dev/sdb. To verify this unplug your sony and run mount again. This is my mount output with my nook plugged in:
Spoiler:
Code:
XxXxXx@XxXxXx-SDA ~ $ mount
/dev/sda1 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
none on /sys/fs/cgroup type tmpfs (rw)
none on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw)
none on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw)
none on /sys/kernel/security type securityfs (rw)
udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=0620)
tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,size=10%,mode=0755)
none on /run/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=5242880)
none on /run/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)
none on /run/user type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=104857600,mode=0755)
none on /sys/fs/pstore type pstore (rw)
binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
systemd on /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd type cgroup (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev, none, name=systemd)
gvfsd-fuse on /run/user/1000/gvfs type fuse.gvfsd-fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=XxXxXx)
/dev/sdb1 on /media/XxXxXx/8af5e73d-c078-4018-8623-2240295d3d8a type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=udisks2)
/dev/sdd on /media/XxXxXx/JBLEBOOK type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,showexec,flush,uhelper=udisks2)
/dev/sdc on /media/XxXxXx/NOOK type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,showexec,flush,uhelper=udisks2)
XxXxXx@XxXxXx-SDA ~ $

You can see that it is mounted as /dev/sdc for the nook internal memory and as /dev/sdd for the sd card.
You will want to use:
Code:
sudo fsck.vfat -y /dev/sdb
Remember the old windows/dos checkdisk? This is bacialy the linux version.
If you still have a windows computer you could just hook the sony to it and run the disk utilities on it, check disk and disk repair.

I would factory reset the sony then use as normal. Leave the Books folder if that is the sony default.

Thanks bernie. I have access to a Windows 8 computer so I'll try that route first. Thanks very much.

So, to be absolute sure:

1) Run the disk utilities/repair first

then 2) re-set the Sony?

And for 2) is it a soft reset or a hard reset?

Thanks.

My recommendation is to do a format--fat 16--after doing the check disk then a factory reset.

Sorry if it seems like I'm beating a dead horse, bernie. I found the disk management tool in Windows 8. So (I haven't done it yet) I plug the Sony in and run the "repair" on the Sony entry in the disk management tool. Then I format the whole Sony (or just part) to fat16? And do I do that in the disk management tool as well? (I know how to do the factory re-set.) Thanks.

Windows will only format the partition it can see, only the fat partition will be formated. The system partition is hidden and will be unaffected.

We are doing the format in the hope that if your sony has some bad memory sectors then the format will mark them as bad in the FAT.

Bernie! Thanks man. I got it working. I plugged it in to a Windows computer and went to the Disk Management tool. There, to my great surprise, it said the device was working properly. I checked into formatting it but that seemed to be okay too. There was a button on the formatting screen that said 'restore device to defaults' that I was VERY tempted to press but didn't.

What I figured was that since the device was working properly and I knew the "Books" folder was missing in the "Media" folder I'd try pasting a new "Books" folder into the "Media" folder. That did it.

I was able to copy and paste a new book in.

Really appreciate your help!
