Mini A New Toy!

Hey, I just ordered a Kobo Mini!

Anything I should know about this device? Anything I should watch out for?

I'd love to hear about your experience with this little gem.

I carry mine in shirt pocket everywhere. Good rigid design with 4 screws, double sided tape and plastic clips holding it together. Mine came with 2 gig internal uSD card. I cloned image to 4 gig SanDisc internal uSD and expanded partition to use available memory.

Does the internal memory as manufactured vary, or are all minis the same?

They vary. I had 2, and they both had 4gb internal cards, which I expanded to full use.

The contrast on the Mini is excellent.

Very interesting. I wonder what I will get.

Do you know how to tell what sort of memory card is on board? Also, can you point me to instructions on how to expand the memory? (I do have a LOT of epubs I could transfer onto the new Mini as soon as I get it.) I don't have to root the critter, I hope.

Mine had Sandisk cards, so good ones. You can expand the memory, or clone the card, write it to a new card, and expand that card....doing it that way you can easily have a Mini with 32 gig memory. The best thing is, it's easy to open (unlike the others, that have to be pried apart).

Wow! That's impressive. I'm not sure I'm brave enough for that kind of brain surgery!

It's so easy with the Mini, though. Pop off the back (it's designed to come off) and there are 6 tiny screws. Take them out, and the inside back comes right off. The card is easy to slide out and replace.

Much harder on the Glo, I did two of them, and they now have 16 GB cards in them, but the power sliders don't work now.

My mini came with 2 gig uSD card while many came with 4 gig uSd card formatted to only use 2 gig. Nice little ereader that I have never had any problems with my mini. Now has software version 3.4.1 dated May 25 2014

I have 3.12.0 running on mine. I don't use it much, because I prefer the lighted readers. I tend to take my Aura everywhere.

If you have a big library it's better to load in batches, Kobo takes some time processing the books you add

Here's another question: although I'm buying the Mini new, it may well have been sitting on a shelf for two or three years. Will that degrade the battery life?

With known good books that I have loaded on other kobo readers I never have problems loaded them on a new Kobo. 500 or 1000 books at a time is OK. New books maybe 10 at a time depending on source.

I use Calibre to update Book metadata and download new cover or to generate a new cover. Covers that Calibre now generates are much easier to read on small thumb nails on home screen. In library settings "Show thumbnail images in list view ON" I leave unchecked because to small to be useful. Wish I could do this on home screen also if it had title and author captions.

If the battery has drained to zero in storage, that will affect its life.
