Includes an 1847 Werewolf novel ! Penny Dreadful Multipack Vol. 1 (Illustrated. Annotated. 'Wagner The Wehr-Wolf,' 'Varney The Vampire,' 'The Mysteries of London Vol. 1' + Bonus Features) (Penny Dreadful Multipacks) by George W. M. Reynolds & James Malcolm Rymer Three epic PENNY DREADFUL CLASSICS remastered for Kindle with original art, essays, free audio recordings and detailed annotations: Wagner The Wehr-Wolf, Varney The Vampire and The Mysteries of London. WAGNER THE WEHR-WOLF Published in 1847, 'Wagner' is one of the first werewolf novels in English Literature. It is set in the sixteenth century and begins with a recently abandoned old man waiting in vain for his granddaughter to return and care for him as a storm rages in the ancient forest surrounding his isolated cottage. To his surprise, a stranger appears and offers him something he cannot refuse: beauty and youth. But it comes with a price as he must also suffer the curse of the werewolf. Love, violence, and intrigue are all weaved around Fernand Wagner as he struggles to balance being a human and a murderous animal. As things become more out of hand and uncontrollable, the secret he has been trying to hide may just have to come forth and be faced by all involved, including his beloved Nisida. VARNEY THE VAMPIRE One of the earliest penny dreadfuls, 'Varney' is the original vampire story and it was wildly popular with Victorian readers, remaining the Number One serial for two years. It appeared in eight part installments every month between 1845-7. The full version collected here clocks in at an epic 667,000 words. This hugely influential work continues to enthrall and is presented here in electronic book form for the first time with its original illustrations. THE MYSTERIES OF LONDON VOL. 1 Largely forgotten now, 'The Mysteries of London' was one of the biggest selling novels in mid-Victorian England, outselling contemporaneous works from Dickens and Thackeray. The first series was published in weekly installments from 1844-46, priced at a penny each. George W. M. Reynolds wrote the first two series of this long-running narrative of life in the seedy underbelly of mid-nineteenth-century London. Thomas Miller wrote the third series and Edward L. Blanchard wrote the fourth series of this immensely popular title. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HB6337S/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HB6337S/ http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00HB6337S/ http://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00HB6337S/ |

Information Only:
It needs to be noted that VARNEY THE VAMPIRE, which is part of this collection, is not complete. The incomplete novel listed above does not have PART 3. Nevertheless, for a free ebook, if one wishes to read an incomplete penny dreadful, this is a great bargain. The problem, as mentioned in one of the reviews, is the result of an error at Gutenberg (which has since been fixed?). Hopefully, the publisher will rectify this error in future editions, so that the complete penny dreadful is present. I want to thank Little.Egret for mentioning this, however, since I wasn't aware of this series. I have the complete version, and purchased it from Amazon, but I can no longer find it listed with the cover that I have on it. ADDED: I found it: Here's the complete version: http://www.amazon.com/Varney-Vampire...rds=b00cfu8r8k Last edited by Dr. Drib; 09-04-2014 at 03:20 PM. |

Some graphic language and violence. 131 Days Series Order: Book 1: 131 Days Book 2: Ten Book 3: House of Pain Cross-posted in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy thread. Free from the publisher via KDP Select @ Amazon:
George's Terms by catt dahman, who apparently insists on spelling their name in the Kindle listings all lower-case, e. e. cummings/bell hooks style, unless that's a very consistent publisher typo, and 1st in their Z is for Zombie series. This is out from small start-up niche publisher Severed Press (ISFDB), who have been reprinting and occasionally freebieing to us Tim Curran's (ISFDB) backlist works. In Northeast Texas, the epic adventure of a group of survivors begins as they take refuge in a hospital, waiting to see if the world-wide Red Infection can be stopped before all humanity is wiped out. As victims awaken from a coma, they now have the basic need to attack loved ones, to spread the infection, and to feed on warm flesh. Only rage remains. In days, the dead outnumber the living, and the US turns to the ultimate weapons to stop the infection. In a world filled with zombies, survivors find that the living can be far more inhumane and cruel than anything they have ever imagined, as raiders scavenge for supplies and lawlessness and hatred are the norm. Both outlaws and zombies crave meat. In this time of hopelessness and horror, a bullet to the brain may be the kindest action. George, an older, retired police officer, sets his own terms: fight and survive or go the way you want, but don’t let the zombies win. He explains that everyone is responsible for his own fate, and if that means going out on unpopular terms, then so be it. Len, a retired Marine; a quiet cowboy, Kim; a hot-tempered Hispanic woman, Julia; and a compassionate young woman, Beth all begin their terrorizing journey, not only to survive, but also to establish a new society, find love and joy in a barren, bloody landscape, and to face gathering enemies. |

The Walking Dead: The Fall of the Governor, Part One - 99p at Amazon UK
Third in the series of spin-off novels based on the comic. Product Description Über-villain Phillip Blake has come a long way. He journeyed from humble beginnings into the dark heart of the zombie apocalypse. And here, he has manoeuvred to become a small town’s self-proclaimed leader. But Woodbury’s residents (those who survive) will live to regret the day Blake, aka the Governor, darkened their doors. For the Governor runs a twisted, violent dictatorship within Woodbury’s ever-tightening barricades. Those that manage to breach those barricades find only misery within, and the terror of the zombie menace without. The Governor’s complex story continues in a tour de force of action and horror. Iconic characters from the comic book, including Rick, Michonne, and Glenn, make their entrance onto this nightmarish stage, and fans of The Walking Dead will see these characters in a whole new light. |

Free from the author's small press startup via KDP Select @ Amazon:
Dead Records by Steven Savile (ISFDB, Wikipedia) & Jordan Ellinger, a supernatural organized crime comedy. Savile writes mostly assorted sfnal TV tie-in stuff, and also offers a bunch of other self-pub/small-press freebies via his two Smashwords author pages, if you're interested in giving them a try. Marcus is having a bad day. It's hard work launching a new band in this digital age, but he's taken a gamble, borrowed the cash from Yevgeny Dolgov (a vampiric mafia boss fresh out of Romania, see told you it was bad) to finance an album, some promotion, maybe even a tour, only Yevgeny's got different ideas. He wants Marcus to make his girl Aura a star and will do anything to help her on the way, including whacking the Fortunate Friday's right in the middle of the studio with most of the tracks still unrecorded. That's a bad day. No doubt about it. Bad. Especially for the Fortunate Fridays (the unfortunate band who didn't make it all the way to Friday) but it's not so good for Marcus either. He's up to his neck (a bad place to be with a vampiric mobster) in brown stuff. He's got two choices, run, or make the girl a star. Only the girl's not a girl, she's a siren, and running isn't really an option. Surrounded by sex demons, undead mob enforcers and a neighbour who is slowly transmogrifying into a cockroach, Marcus's day is about to get a whole lot worse. |

The House on the Borderland
by William Hope Hodgson This sounded interesting, but when I saw the published date, I thought, hey, what if it is at Project Gutenberg? And sure enough... Five books by this author (I searched PG by his name), including The House on the Borderland, are available in several formats: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/sear...m+Hope+Hodgson Also, Off Topic, but I was at a yard sale today and they had an 1890 edition, very beat up of Lorna Doone, so I checked PG and of course they had it -- and the picture of the book itself looked exactly like the one I saw at the sale, illustrations included. I downloaded it, too, just because. |
