I just received a HD 7 Kindle for Christmas. I am still not very familiar with it. I have downloaded 5 apps - facebook, twitter, live journal, pinterest, and kik. It is already telling me that I am "low on memory". From what I have read on threads on here, it seems like I should be able to download a LOT more than 5 apps before the device is "low on memory".
Could this mean that I have a defective device? My only other thought is that maybe I need to close out apps when I am not using them? (like on the iphone you can close out apps). If that is the case, where do I go in the device to do so? I have only used the kindle twice so I'm a newbie. Thanks. |

How many gig of memory did u get? You can answer this in the Device information also check see what memory you really have. A Lot of space is taken by the On Board apps & operation system. With my 16 gig I only have 14 gig for me out of the box. Add my apps ebooks audible a few movies etc its full! The $99 Fire starts with 8 gig - all the pre installs stuff so betting u don't have but 4 gig left!

Right out of the box ...sounds like u only had about 5 gig But guess you now figure out why it telling u low memory. And with Amazon you Cant add memory with a SDCard.
Good news is You Can contact CS & upgrade! They will for a small fee take yours back & sell you a 16 gig...which gives you about 14 gig of space! Last edited by Barbara1955; 01-08-2015 at 10:07 PM. |

Upgrading wont fix this. One of your apps must be HUGE and not set to properly install on the right memory. Can you list which 5 apps you have installed and we can try and track down which app is taking all your app memory. |

Ummm... while there are perhaps technically two storage locations the Fire tablet makes the "SD Card" location virtually inaccessible and relies almost entirely on what it labels "Internal storage".
To get to the bottom of this the OP could install CCleaner from the Amazon Appstore. First, check "System Info" from the slide out menu on the left and make sure that the Internal Storage category is getting all of the usage and that the SD Card category says that basically nothing is being used at all. (The bar should be empty and the Used and Free should both say "0 B"). This would be normal. Second, pull out the menu again and touch "App Manager". Under both "Installed Applications" and "System Applications" the SD Card bar should say some small amount of megabytes (like 20 or 30 MB out of O B) and the bar should be completely filled. This would be normal. In order to force quit applications you can do either of the following: when in an application (like Silk or Email) or a subcategory of the main Fire interface (like Apps or Games) and the navigation bar is present along the bottom of the screen or the right side (the arrow, home, and search buttons) you can slide your finger out from the bottom or side of the screen (wherever the navigation bar is) and a tray will slide out. You can swipe apps out of the tray and this will force them to quit. Secondly, you can force an application to quit by going to Settings>Applications>Manage All Applications. Usually you can drill down further and select Running Applications from the drop down menu at the top. Touch an application and then touch the "Force Stop" button at the top of the listing. You can get to settings from a pinned settings app on the Homescreen/favorites, by pulling down from the top of the screen to show the shade with quick settings and notifications on it (settings is on the far right) or by finding the "Settings" app in the Apps section of the Fire tablet. I'm wondering: are you getting some general warning that is telling you your memory is low, or are you attempting to install an app and THEN being told you are low on memory. Depending on the size of the application, sometimes when the downloaded packages are being unpacked and decompressed they will end up earmarking more space for the installation process than they actually need for the app to be downloaded or installed. Just by the apps mentioned I would say Pinterest or Facebook. I know they are heavy apps as I loaded the ios versions on my iPhone them using a manager app I realised they were draining my battery so I uninstalled them. Best thing to do is uninstall all the added apps then load them in order of importance and see how you get on after each app is loaded.
If it can be returned and the 16GB purchased that would be a better move long term. |
