Issue with pictures on latest basic kindle

Hello,

I just got a new basic model Kindle and have a few questions about pictures.
I loaded on some third party books that look great on my old kindle 3rd generation I believe (full keyboard on the bottom).
Picture size in these files has always been 566 x 700 and that has essentially filled the screen. On the new Kindle, those same pics look much smaller. I am assuming this is because the new Kindle must have a higher res screen. Is that right? On the new Kindle, what is the appropriate size image to fill the screen?
I am estimating something like 740 x 1000....thoughts?
If I start making books with that size image, what will happen if someone views it on their older model Kindles?

Resolution of the screen itself is the same. Are you sure your Kindle Keyboard did not have the margins hacked customized to zero?

side by side screen shot

Yes, positive it was not hacked/customized as I have seen the files on multiple old kindles.
Here is the exact same file loaded on the old Kindle vs the New Kindle so you can see the difference in display.

The image is 503 x 700 in case that helps.
Any ideas how to fix this problem?

Ah, I see. When creating a Kindle book Amazon recommends to use color images at 300 ppi resolution with highest quality setting possible as long as each picture be less than 5mb. Only the cover image is allowed to completely fill the screen, the other images are a maximum of the width of screen minus margins, height depending on the width. That is if the picture is big enough. It also should be at least 600 px wide by at least 800 px high.

In your case the picture is simply too small by Amazon's standard. Try making it bigger - sounds like a lot bigger won't hurt. Just make it 1006 x 1400 for double resolution - that should go without hurting the IQ any. Load on both old K3 and new Kindle Basic - should look the same.

Is this only true of the new Kindle? As you can see the old kindle is fine.

Are you suggesting that I keep the same image and just code it to be larger or that I actually go back to the original image and resize it before insertion into the original epub before converting to mobi?

So, I noticed that the new Kindle E-reader (entry level 49.99 on black friday) can use the AZW3 files as well as the MOBI. When I load both on the new Kindle, the MOBI has the tiny pics, but the AZW3 looks great. I don't know why, but that works.

The recommendations I posted earlier are a mix of old and new. Mostly the new format. It is not necessary to resize your pictures any as long as you are willing to edit how the images are embedded either in epub or kf8 format.

Created an ebook just to test that out. And attached is the result in KF8, the epub source is simply this:

Code:
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en">
<head>
  <title>Image Test</title>
<style type="text/css">
  img {page-break-before:always;}
</style>
</head>
<body>
  <center>
    <h1>Image Test with 250x332</h1>
    <img alt="duck" src="duck.jpg" />
    <img alt="duck" width="100%" src="duck.jpg" />
    <img alt="duck" height="100%" src="duck.jpg" />
    <img alt="duck" width="50%" src="duck.jpg" />
  </center>
</pb>
</body>
</html>
Both epub and kf8 are attached (quick done in calibre started as epub then converted to azw3).

Works both on my PW and KT to fill the whole page either with width or height set to 100%.
Attached Files
File Type: azw3 Images - Duckie Tigger.azw3 (71.5 KB, 113 views)
File Type: epub Images - Duckie Tigger.epub (22.9 KB, 104 views)

Depending what you used to convert (presumeably calibre) it probably "fixed" the KF8 (AZW3) automatically to emulate how the old mobi used to be interpreted on older Kindles that don't support the new KF8 format. Hard telling without looking inside.
