Talking I may be one lousy chess player, but...

But the BETA chess game included in my Kobo is just impossible to beat! Even in Begginer mode, I get check-mated in under 10 or 12 moves.

You would expect the easiest AI to behave dumb-ish or randomly, not crush you in a merciless display of skill. It is ridiculous!

Maybe it is all a ruse from Kobo to sell more chess guide e-books (which I've seen at affordable prices!)

Anybody else has found it as difficult?

Clearly it's a ruse.

The chess AI is awful, and the rules’ engine is faulty: sometimes it declares a pat when there is absolutely no reason to. But is not strong; I find its strength consistent in every difficulty level. The mention “beta” is very appropriate…

You might want to check out Sergey's "pbchess", it seems to be designed as a tool to learn and improve your chess game. Coolreader and other utilities come with the Kobo readers version.

Luck;
Ken
