Using Kindle on a Linux PC

Hi there .... I've been using Calibre for years - and have never had a problem. I have now got rid of my Kindle Keyboard reader, and am using a Bookeen. No problem so far. I use Ubuntu Linux. I can install and run Windows Kindle for PC using the Wine compatibility layer, but there is no way I can get a serial number from the program. The obvious thing was to install the Windows build of Calibre into Wine. It fails to install and I can get no error messages either from a Linux terminal or from the Windows terminal. I've tried the latest 2.x build, and the latest 1.x build with no result.

Any thoughts or suggestions for getting Calibre to install under Wine?

Regards, Barry.

Amazon has a Kindle cloud reader, may that will work.
Wine has no usb support. Calibre works great in Linux, don't use the version from the repo (but from the Calibre website)

Calibre was developed under and runs natively on Linux. It uses Qt libs, for crying out loud. Why would you bother installing the Windows version through Wine?

If you really, really (really?) want the Windows version, I guess you could install a lite version of Windows 7 using VirtualBox, in a 5-10 GB .vdi file, just for Calibre.

There are instructions in the DeDRM plugin for getting K4PC and ADE both working with the plugin through WINE.

See the readme, but we cannot discuss it more in depth here. Forum rules, we cannot give detailed HOWTOs.

You can ask for guidance on apprentice alf's website, there are some helpful people there. (Sometimes the same people...)

I run Calibre natively in Linux Mint -- nearly the newest release (I only update about every three releases -- otherwise I would be updating constantly). The plugins work fine with it. Why would you want to run Windows Calibre under Wine? (Just curious.)
