Missing covers

Since one of the recent upgrades, Calibre has lost the covers to many of my books, including those generated by previous versions of Calibre. They show up if I open the ebook, but in the information pane to the right of the listing it just shows a generic untitled brown book. Any advice would be appreciated.

run the Library maintenance tool. Both phases. see what that reports

cover shown in the Calibre GUI (details or Grid) are stored with the book (not IN, but it may be the same cover).

I have never seen Calibre (in all the years) lose a cover without user help

Thanks for your interest. I have sorted myself out.
First, I used the Library Maintenance tool to make sure everything was in good shape.
Then I discovered uned Bulk edit metadata the option to set the cover from within the ebook which restored most of the covers (why this option is not available for editing the metadata individually I'm not sure).

Can't think how I lost the covers. I moved the location of the Library, and of over 5000 books, only about 50 retained the cover.jpg file.

Ah well, mostly sorted now.

It IS.

There are two buttons on the left of the box that lists the available formats. You can select one of the format and use these to extract the values. One extracts the embedded cover image - the other the embedded metadata.

If so that's very odd and suggests there's a bug.

I recall one of the "I can do copies and moves faster and safer than windows can' utilities would lose files if the same name appeared in multiple subdirectories. Oddly enough files lost were a truckload of folder.jpg's. Luckily the user did a backup before the move.

I have the standard (DOS/Win) Xcopy to copy a Library to a new location many times. Once I verify success, I then delete the original (safe than sorry).

Ah, thank you intimpi. And there was I looking for it in the Change Cover box!

BetterRed - I moved the files with Windows copy and then set up a new Calibre database at the new location using "Use exisiting library at the new location". The list for creating a new DB doesn't seem toi include a copy function and I don't like moving databases in case there is a problem part way through. So it wasn't Calibre's fault, so far as I can see.

Create New Library has the option to borrow the structure of the existing one.

(all done with Calibre)
This is step 1 for sub-setting or creating a 'working-on-it' Library
Step 2 is populating the new Lib. a) Select books in existing:right click:copy-to-Library; <newLibrary> b)The traditional way: 'Add Books'
