Leave Wi-Fi running, or airplane mod ? ..... Poll
Reading a review (amazon) on the new Voyage the reviewer, who seemed very knowledgeable, mentioned that he turns the WI-FI off when he isn't using it to download. Does it make that much of a difference in battery life ?

Yes, WiFi is a big drain. Any device not running off a plug should only have WiFi on when it is needed.

It drains my Nexus7 quite a bit faster. And I haven't even tried to keep it on on my Kindles, not interested in downloading the latest set of adds...

It did make a difference on my Kindle Keyboard. Not that shaving a couple days off the weeks-long battery life of that device mattered much. But still, I just automatically turn off Wi-Fi on all my devices when I'm not specifically using it.
I have to turn it off on my Galaxy Tab or I risk finding a dead battery in the morning. Last edited by luvhilndr; 10-26-2014 at 06:22 PM. Reason: additional info |

On the Kindle, turning WiFi off roughly doubles the battery life.

Definitely turn it off. Frankly, you don't need it on except to sync where you are in a book (on a Kindle) or to download books. Otherwise, keep it off. It is especially important with newer e-ink devices that are frontlit as the light also drains the battery.

And if you read on different devices you need the sync all the time. So keep it always on and have the convenience that is possible.

I only turn it on to do a quick sync; it takes less than a minute. I do this when I am done reading for a particular session or leaving home. For me, it makes no sense to keep it on all the time.

WiFi is a big battery hog. It is one of the reasons I like to keep all my books on the device instead of in the cloud.

I do think it has uses like syncing settings/bookmarks and as a backup for smaller files but it will never be a valid replacement for local storage. |

I switch Wifi off when I'm travelling - which isn't that often. When I'm at home I tend to forget and anyway I'm never far from a power socket or PC. Also, it's one of the advantages of having multiple devices (and Calibre) that I can switch whilst another is charging if I need to.

I leave 'er on full-time. I can't be bothered with any offy-onny-offy nonsense.

Shut... it... off! Maybe forever. They way Barnes & Noble has been behaving lately, I don't want to offer them the opportunity for a surprise 'update' to the operating system.
