Calibre will not start

Hi,
I am using Windows 10 (64 bit). Have used Calibre for years. Never had an issue.

5.11 was working fine. Then all of a sudden would not start. Tried uninstalling, restart and installing. Even tried going back to version 4.23 (which worked absolutely fine before installing 5.11) but same issue. No start and no error message.

Please see debug log below:

calibre 5.11 [64bit] embedded-python: True is64bit: True
Windows-10-10.0.19041 Windows ('64bit', 'WindowsPE')
('Windows', '10', '10.0.19041')
Python 3.8.5
Windows: ('10', '10.0.19041', '', 'Multiprocessor Free')
Interface language: None
Turning on automatic hidpi scaling

Any thoughts on what could be the issue?

Try updating your video driver.

Another thing to try is to download the portable version of Calibre. If that starts, it may be a configuration issue.

That is a rather good idea to try.

Just a guess, but try setting your 'Adjust for high resolution screens' to OFF.

I noticed that my 5.12 version shows it to being set to AUTOMATIC. Which is interesting because I've never set it to anything before.

This setting is in the Look and feel tab in Preferences.

Note: I just updated to 5.12 because of a certain app that i use a lot. ;-)

I'm not sure how to do this setting change if you can't get the program to start. Someone else will have to help you with that.

Try rebooting to safe mode and see if Calibre runs.

Exclamation same issue

I have the same issue, Calibre won't start.
Everything I have gathered so far,
-It launches in Safe Mode just fine.
-I have disabled all startup programs in Task Manager but it still doesn't launch.
-Calibre 32-bit also doesn't launch, nor does Calibre Portable.

I will also say that whatever the problem is, it could have only occurred by itself as it worked fine when I turned my computer on and launched it this morning(12 hours ago). It launched just fine and I wrote some metadata for some books and then left for work. When I came back from work and I tried to open a book it wouldn't and so I tried restarting the program and it wouldn't launch, thus starting my troubleshooting process.

if it is working in safe mode that means some program is interfering. typical cuprits are anti-virus programs. try disabling those.

Disabling my Anti-Virus did nothing, I tried both turning off every setting in the anti-virus and also killing the entire program through task manager, neither helped.

Nevermind, It was some weird driver thing that I solved through a complete graphics driver re-installation. Works fine now.

Well done! It's good to know for advise for others to possibly fix a non-working Calibre.
