Aura HD - many problems.

Welcome Everyone

Yesterday, I got my new Kobo Aura HD reader.
My first impression is really bad.

Beginning was ok.
- starting without any problems
- updates without any problems
- cooperation with PC without any problems

I have moved to reader some "found in internet" books:
15 books, some as epub and some as mobi.

And then first problems:
- disconnecting from PC (after Eject in Kobo Dekstop). Reader hangs on "Processing content ... " screen. It goes to 87% and hangs. Basic reset helped.
- another disconnecting from PC - reader didn't notice that it is disconnected.
Still screen with info that reader is connected to PC was shown. Basic reset helped...

Reading books. Generally ok.
But one or two times it hangs when I navigated from book to "Home" or "Books" screen.

Reading PDF, 28MB.
Opening took many seconds. Reader hangs when I tried to navigate to "Home" or "Books" screen. Again Basic Reset and deleting pdf file helped...

Reading epub, 30MB
Opening took many seconds. Reader hangs when I tried to navigate to "Home" or "Books" screen. Again Basic Reset and deleting file helped...

Is it normal behaviour for this reader?

Regards, and thank in advance.

Delete that stuff, go and buy legal books, try them, and report back.

If it's still misbehaving badly, a full factory reset may be your next step.

If you just bought it, you can possibly return the unit and ask for a replacement.

I do think that your books cause the issues you've mentioned.
When I read "epub, 30MB" in size. Well, that is a very huge one.
I just wonder how large the seperate files inside this epub are. Do these files exceed the 'recommended' maximum file sizes for epub?
It would certainly explain why it took so long to load.
Or even crash the reader… don't be surprised if it does.

Additionally not all found ebooks can be considered to be of high quality. If you want some books known to be well marked up try the ones located in the Mobile Read library. They are all guaranteed to be legal and well formatted.

Because Mobileread isn't here to help people with technical issues with their crappy pirated books. It's part of the forum rules. Posts asking for same are routinely deleted.

If they were bought from somewhere and they're broken, people here might be able to suggest the best way to get the appropriate tech support.

Etc.

30MB is incredibly large for an epub file. I'm suspecting a poorly formatted book, or one made of all images or at least a lot of images to reach that size. And if it came from a suspicious source and not purchased, I'd bet anything that's the issue.

If you bought a book from somewhere and it's that large in size, I'd really be curious to know what book and what's in it to cause that inflated size.

But as meeera said, where it came from is definitely a problem here, we can't help with pirated books at all.

Kobo's Mobi support is limited and unfortunately it will hang up like that on those it doesn't support rather than failing gracefully.

You don't have to allow Kobo to process all your ebook library, you can hide the files from the Kobo processing. They can be read with one of the alternative reading programs like Koreader or Coolreader. See this install guide. It includes info on how to create the hidden folders.

I have an ~7000 file library with ebooks, PDFs and documents of many kinds in the hidden library and read them mostly with Koreader. I only have a few that I let Kobo see.

Luck;
Ken

P.S.; Koreader is in another period of rapid development with several unique features recently added, including OPDS support, a calibre companion plugin, suspend display of book cover or not, and several others. (Not all of these are in the official release download, but most are on the Over The Air (OTA) server). (The OTA is for wireless updating of Koreader, I prefer to just download it on my PC and copy/merge the koreader folder, to do the update.)

Thank you very much for your answers.

I will make a "Factory reset" today.
Then I will download some free books available on Kobo Store.
It should be a good test.

On the other side. Is it possible to find what is cousing problems?
Any log files or error dumps?

Starting from a clean slate is a good idea.

Yes and no. I've found some horribly formatted books in all the stores that I have tried. That includes books that I paid for. The library here is a good source for well constructed epubs.

If there was a crash, there could be a stack log on the .kobo directory. The file names will be "stack_nn.log". The contents aren't that useful without access to the code, but at the least you can tell if it is all the same error. They can be supplied to Kobo to help them debug the problem.

I have made "Factory Resest". Downloaded some free books from Kobo Store - everythings works fine. Without any problems.

I have found big free epub file on Microsoft site.
"Programming Windows 8 Apps with HTML, CSS and JavaScript". Size is almost 40MB. - still everything works fine. No problems with hanging, opening and navigation.

I took epubs from my first pack which coused problems - still everything is ok.

Generally as long as I used only epub files - no problems with disconnecting reader from PC, opening books, navigation etc.

It seems, that like it was mentioned in one of upper replies, mobi files could make my problems.
Officially reader should cope with this format.
Does anyone reads mobi on Kobo?

Today, I will make one more test and convert mobi to epub.

Good.

I've tried an epub version of a SQLServer manual in the past. It worked surprisingly well. The main problem is that some of the graphics were to small.

Officially yes. But, there are good mobi and bad mobi. Just as there are good epub and bad epub. I have tried some mobi in the past and they were OK. But, they didn't work as well as the epub version after a calibre conversion. I don't remember exactly what the problem was, just that it wasn't as good.

If you want to try some mobi's grab them from the MobileRead library. These will be well constructed books. They are more likely to work than a random book obtained from elsewhere.

Last time I checked Kobo's website was inconsistent and only listed Mobi support in the tech specs and not in the list of supported formats in the FAQ or support pages.

I always use Calibre to convert mobi to epub before sending to the device, have never had any problems. I don't think the mobi support is very good on Kobo.
