kobo glo frozen from sleep

I have a second kobo glo which exhibits the following problem, upon putting it to sleep with a sleep cover / case I got on eBay, next morning it does not come out of sleep.

The screen is frozen at the Sleeping / recent book cover screen. Seems to reboot when I plug it in the PC, I notice that the battery drops to 24%. running 3.3.0.

Thoughts?

Does it happen only when you leave it overnight or even if you just close and open the sleep cover? How about putting the device to sleep using the switch? 3.3 was supposed to fix some sleep bugs. Did this happen with the previous firmware version?

good ideas/troubleshooting advice about ... a couple other thoughts.

First thought is to charge up the battery a ways. Anything below 30% and the battery meter isn't all that accurate.

Second thing to try is to see if it's the ebay sleep cover that's the issue ... With the light on the Glo, close the sleep cover, and look to make sure the display stops glowing. That will at least help you know for certain it's going to sleep.

In addition to this, the magnet might be placed incorrectly and might have been causing your device to sleep and wake constantly, all night. It will explain why the battery drops and why it becomes frozen. The battery might have been depleted enough to not wake up again...

As the others have said, it might be an issue with the cover. Something like this was reported a while ago. The problem turned out to be that the cover had an internal pocket that was touching the screen and prevented the device from sleeping and used lots of battery. Kobo did change things so this should be OK, but it is worthwhile testing what happens if you don't close the cover and let the automatic sleep happen.

Another possibility is the automatic sync. I've seen something like this few times if something goes wrong with the network. The sync doesn't happen but it keeps trying. This chews through the battery and I have had hangs when I start to use the device. Turning the automatic sync or the WiFi off should test if this is the problem.

I have exactly the same problem, along with many others! I am using a Kobo sleep cover which has always worked well, however just lately the glo doesn't wake up when I open the cover and the battery is dead when I plug it in. I have stopped using the cover to put the glo to sleep and now use the button. Even so, I often have the same problem next time I go to use it. It's almost as if it doesn't realise that it's supposed to have gone to sleep and therefore drains the battery. I've had to recharge twice this week already due to this and other problems. I am also running 3.3.0

I don't think think it's the sleep cover, as I do notice it going to and coming out of sleep with the cover. Maybe something is happening once I close the cover during the course od the night, so I'll test without it.

I always turn off the WiFi, but I did not know about the automatic sync. I just turned it off and will report back.

Well, I took off the cover and turned off the automatic sync and the device has not crashed with severe battery drain for a couple of days now.

Because I did both, I'm sure what solved it. I'm leaning toward the automatic sync. Maybe while the WiFi is off, the automatic sync process drains goes crazy and drains the battery. Some more testing is needed.
Will try to put the cover back and see what happens.
Thanks for the help.

Good to hear there is at least a workaround for you.

I'm pretty confident this isn't the case. If I turn the WiFi off overnight on either of my Touches or my Glo, there is no noticeable battery usage. If the WiFi is on, the battery does drop a bit.

And hopefully you will find the cause.

I took the cover off mine too and I haven't had any problem with battery drain since! My wifi is always switched off so no auto sync for me to worry about. So, for me, the problem was definitely the cover - it's in the bin now and a new neoprene sleeve is in the post!

Can anybody recommend any case/covers that don't exhibit this battery drain problem? Preferable ebay links, much appreciated.

This is what I've just ordered, it will at least protect the KoboGlo when I'm not using it. I didn't want another sleepcover as I don't want all the hassle again.

I've had no battery drain trouble with two different Gecko Slimfit covers.

Leaving wifi on is a huge battery drain, syncing every night makes the drain even worse.

I've always had sleep covers on mine and I've had zero problems with any battery drain. I also never shut the light off, I let the sleep cover shut it off so it comes back on as soon as I open the cover to read again.

If your sleep cover isn't working and leaving the light on, it's easy enough to see, just go into a dark room or closet and look at the edges of the cover. Or when you open it, you'll always see the light off and then turning on as another way to check it.

I'd bet anything it's leaving the wifi on and nightly syncing though and not a problem with the sleep cover.

Mine wasn't behaving like that at all. I never have wifi on (we've got limited download as on a mobile signal) and only ever sync once in a blue moon. My light was always on when I went to bed in case I wanted to pick up and read if I woke in the wee hours. I would close the sleep cover (kobo branded) and there would be no light escaping from the cover so I assumed that the device was asleep. However, when going back to it the next morning the battery would be completely drained. I then started to put the unit to sleep using the power button and still had the same problem. Took it out of its case et voila, problem solved! I've gone from charging the e-reader 3-4 times a week to once a week and, if anything, I'm now reading more because the problems I was having have ended.
