meta name="viewport"

PHP Code:
<meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale = 1.0,maximum-scale = 1.0" />
What are the upsides and downsides to adding this to an epub?
Since it's reflowable, is that meta tag necessary?

That meta tag won't do anything.

As one of the search options of this forum is "Search By Title Only" it perhaps would be helpful to give threads more meaningful names.

The viewport tag is used by WebKit on iOS. This particular setting should prevent the user from zooming in on the content. For a flowing book, I doubt any EPUB reader would let you do that anyway. So yeah, I'd expect it to have no effect.

Now if you're creating an iBooks fixed layout book, that's a different matter.

@dgatwood, yeah, viewport is essential to creating a fixed layout epub. Thanks for the answers everyone!

It would help to give more information when asking your question. You mentioned nothing about iBooks and fixed layout (it's not ePub).

@JSWolf, I wasn't refering initially to ibooks author extension. I was asking a question in general, dgatwood took it in ibooks direction and it's fine since it gave me more info. Basically viewport meta tag is used when you want to create a fixed layout ePub, it has no use for reflowable. Jusr wanted to make sure

<meta> tags are out of the spec, they can contain anything (they are allowed, but have no "meaning"). It is up to the reading application to do something with them, or not. It's quite likely that no application other than iBooks recognizes the viewport meta tag.

But what iBooks creates is not technically ePub for fixed layout.

Exactly what I said. It's not ePub. It's similar, but not quite. That code won't work with any other reading program.

You are right, the code I posted will not work as the idpf specs says that the use of the viewport attribute is essential in creating a fixed layout ePub in the form of:

PHP Code:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=684, height=1024"/>
and not:

PHP Code:
<meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale = 1.0,maximum-scale = 1.0" />
Thanks.

That's Apple and iBooks for you. It's close, but not always close enough and it can be a pain in the butt to get things to work and if you do get things to work, it won't usually work anyplace else.

Thanks.
For sure, WebKit (and presumably iBooks) supports viewport height and width attributes. I'd expect other agents to ignore any additional values that they don't understand, but unfortunately, the EPUB specification is really, really lax in defining such behavior, so.... *sigh*

But in any case, those two values are more typically used in full-screen web apps, not books.

For a complete definition of what viewport means to WebKit, see:

That is the best viewport explanation I have seen so far! bookmarked!
