I agree with the author of the article that there may be some details being withheld. I'm not trying to defend the authorities' actions in this case, but I simply refuse to believe the face-value reports of this incident. There's something missing here. I know there's a lot of dumb out there, but this kind of reaction over the discovery of said scifi book-writing alone (subject-matter notwithstanding)?? I'm not buying it.

I dunno, Diap. There have been lots of overreactions by authorities, especially in schools. I seem to vaguely remember a news story about a female teacher who got in trouble for writing erotica. I wonder how they even knew the guy in the article wrote the books in question, since he used a pseudonym.

He thought bad thoughts about a school. For shame; and administrative leave? Come on, he should've been placed in stocks in the town square so people could throw rotten tomatoes at him. Our punishment these days is way too lax.

True. Part of me wants to believe this is a CYA move. I can picture a student getting put through this particular ringer for writing fiction about a school-shooting (though it STILL should depend entirely upon the tone and how the incident was actually being portrayed), so perhaps they (the school/authorities) were afraid that not taking a similar tack with a teacher could get them in trouble somehow. Still ridiculous (if what we're hearing is, in truth, the full extent of the details), but conceivable I guess; in this Litigious Age.

Unless there is some exceptional circumstance not known, this is a criminal overreaction on the part of the police. Also, why would a judge issue a search warrant based on a book on sale for two years?

The media hype this type of stuff and feed off the fears of parents and schools.

More like "this is what happens when the general population loses the ability to distinguish reality from fiction." There are not enough facepalms to even begin to cover how irrational this is.

So far not one thing has been alleged that would be the bases for an arrest or a search warrant.

It is now being reported that he was sent for evaluation based on a 4 page letter sent to the district and some harrassment issues and not for the books which everyone already knew he wrote. HIPA laws prevent any further information on his mental health but between the ages of 17 and 25 are a common time for certain mental illnesses to appear such as Bi-polar and schizophrenia.
