Aura & Aura HD resolution for Manga & PDF
I've done some search on this topic, but the answers are always "the Aura HD is better". However, they don't say how much better is the resolution for mangas and pdfs, although I'm more interested about the manga reading experience. I read mangas once a week, while I rarely open any pdfs. It would be good to know if the pdf reading experience is indeed much better on the HD though.
Is the resolution really that big of difference? I like the Aura design a whole lot more than the HD, and if the difference is not THAT big... I could deal with it. |

99% of PDFs are formatted for A4, which doesn't work well on devices this size, so unless the PDFs you might occasionally open are designed for smaller paper sizes I wouldn't worry about it.

The 265 DPI resolution is indeed awesome. Take a look at this photo I took of the screen. And then look at this. Notice the fine pen line art on the screen and then notice their size compiare to the lines on the fingerprint mark on the black frame.
That said, the extreme resolution means that any comic where the pages are smaller than 1440×1080 pixels will look pixilated, since they have to be upsampled to fit the screen. As you can se on this side-by-side photo, the HD has a bit more screen area, something that really count when reading comics. But even if the screen is somewhat bigger on the HD, it is still smaller than an ordinary pocket sized manga. Okay, the screen size is 6.8 inches instead of 6.0, but what does this mean? I took a ruler and measured the width and height of the screen area: 10,3 x 13,8 centimeters = 4.0 x 5.4 inches. In the end, I have not done much comic book reading on my HD. So while it certainly is better for comic reading, its not a perfect solution. Last edited by Kasper Hviid; 07-05-2014 at 06:52 AM. |

The resolution on the Aura HD, in terms of DPI, is indeed the best of the best. Unfortunately, the dithering (how the software translates colors and shades into a pattern of dots in only 16 shades of grey) is by far the worst of any current E-ink device I've tested, leaving large swaths of visible banding whereever there should be gradient shading. Not to mention the terrible pan and zoom controls. If you want to read Manga on e-ink (already a bad idea, in my oppinion,) the Paperwhite is the way to go. The Kobo excels at high resolution font rendering, (with the only 1 font that is both complete and adjustable with typegenius, but you can also sideload a variety of other fonts the community has modified to work well with e-ink.)

How the rendering is performed and the options to effect the display, such as zooming and cropping can make a noticeable difference. PDF reflow can make a big difference as well. The Koreader alternative reader offers reflow and an increased performance for PDF viewing, compared to the stock readers. The font options with Koreader are at least as extensive as the stock reader.

Well, the main reason I'm buying an ereader is for epub reading (redundant much redundant?). I read manga once a week and pdfs one or two a month, as I've stated, so it's not like I'd be using the reader for that on a daily basis. All in all, with the information you have provided (dpi, dithering) I've already made my decision. Thanks everyone, I've leanerd quite good things in only 4 post.

With PDF, the page number is displayed at the bottom which makes the images smaller. |
