Adobe Digital Editions Won't Open

I'm wanting to borrow online library books but I can't get ADE to open on my computer. My computer is running the latest Ubuntu and I do have wine installed. I downloaded ADE and I opened it with wine and I completed the download. But for whatever reason I cannot get ADE to open. The only thing that happens is the *loading circle* goes around and around looking like its going to open and then it disappears.

Any way I can get past this problem and get ADE to work on my computer?

Thanks.

Nothing to do with Kobo but a quick google gives the folloowing:

http://robert.penz.name/440/howto-in...e-book-reader/

Another site mentions that you probably will have better luck with 1.7.2 and wine than 2.0

The compatibility lists at http://appdb.winehq.org have all the instructions necessary to make programs run under wine. Lots of programs require all kinds of tweaks to run properly.

In this case, .NET for the later versions of ADE. You will need to follow the instructions here: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...ation&iId=6326

And be aware that ADE 2.0 has not been tested as working on Ubuntu but it has been tested as working on fedora; the difference seems to be that the Ubuntu test was on wine 1.5.27 and the successful fedora run was on wine 1.7.5

Considering that the current main wine package for all the versions of Ubuntu seems to be 1.4, you will probably have to install a later, beta version of wine from the testing repo to get it to work.

You should be able to get ADE 1.7 working, but I don't know how you can possibly download it, since Adobe doesn't offer it anymore, and I haven't found any results on Google during my admittedly cursory inspection.

Best of luck!

EDIT: While I was writing this, someone sneaked in and answered with a link to ADE 1.7 and that is great news!

Adobe themselves still have ADE version 1.7.2 for download here: http://helpx.adobe.com/digital-editi...-editions.html

(Edit: Adobe changed that page to point to ADE 4.0, but the original link to ADE 1.7.2 is still active: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/d...itions_172.exe

Version 1.7.2 is simple to install with wine, the only trick is that once installed and once the device has been plugged in, you need to use wine configuraion to set the device's drive type to "Floppy disk" (under Drives > Show Advanced).

I gave up trying to install version 2.0, as version 1.7.2 does everything I need: download Adobe DRM epubs, authorize/deauthorize devices, transfer to device.

There are reports that Adobe won't authorize things because "Update available", can I assume this isn't true?

I installed ADE 1.7.2 on Debian Linux about a year ago, it has never notified me of any updates, and I haven't had any problem authorizing devices.

Edit: The exact version number I have installed is 1.7.2.1131, downloaded from the Adobe link above.

I have gotten ADE to see my kobo but every time I want to use ADE I have to go in to wine configuration and change it to *floppy disk* so it can be seen. :/

Anyway I can fix this?

No, I can't see a way to get that setting to stick either.

Mine sticks. BUT I have to connect my kobo, THEN open ADE. If I do it the other way around, it won't see it.

Does yours not work even if you do it this method?
