Search chinese font with pinyin and french accents
Hi all,

I have pretty good Chinese font, but unfortunately, the same font is often displaying french accented characters as square...

Any good and free fonts I could use ?

Thanks for any hint.

You can't expect a Chinese font to display French characters. Use a font appropriate for latin-1 characters instead.

A Unicode font can contain both Chinese and Latin characters. Try, for example, the "Lucida Sans Unicode" font that comes with Windows.

An Open Source alternative would be Charis SIL, which is used in many commercial ePubs and covers all Unicode characters required for Pinyin and French though not for Chinese. IMHO, it'd better to apply a different style to Latin text anyway.

@fxp33:After you've installed Charis SIL, you can embed it automatically with Calibre or manually with Sigil.

(BTW, Kindles and Kindle apps support these characters out of the box, because they're contained in the Code2000 Unicode fallback font.)

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your advice. I really have issues with multiple fonts on Kobo reader, due to firmware limitations I guess.

@HarryT: I think I tried lucida Sans. I can't remember on which subset of unicode ranges I got problem with, but it couldn't match the three: chinese, pinyin (accented, I have noticed that some chinese pinyin used a different range for their accents) and french accents and cedillas

@Doitsu : of course there is Charis SIL ! I had completely forgot about it. I will drop it into my Kobo to check the result...
I guess sending code2000 into the kobo would be a copyright violation
