New Nexus 7 Excellent ereader

The new Nexus 7 (often called Nexus 7 2) has much higher resolution than any other 7 inch Android/iOS device on the market. I have tried many ereaders, and find this is a good as, if not better than, any. It is a joy to read on its screen. I also like the Kobo Aura, which has the obvious advantage of not needing to be charged every day or two, but I find the Nexus is as easy on my eyes, and it has the added advantage of access to all the Android apps.

Good to hear! Mine should be here tomorrow! I probably won't use it that much for reading, as I prefer e-ink for that and I purchased it for tablet use, but sometimes, you just have one device with you and it will be nice to have enough resolution to read comfortably.

I think the first Nexus 7 is perfectly OK to read on with respect to the screen. But it is to heavy compared to a Kindle and battery time is not so good.

Agree! Have had mine only a few days and it is a sweet little machine.

First Nexus 7 has a pretty good screen I find mine more than acceptable although the new one has really raised the bar, the 4.3 update seems to have speeded it up considerably as well I'm happy with mine at the minute.

My battery life is pretty good but I will admit I didn't like the way it drains power so easily on standby I don't know why it does that my samsung phone is much better in this regard but apart from that no real complaints I think 4.3 might have improved that a bit as well.

I got mine yesterday. So far I'm thrilled with it. The screen is amazing, the text is so crisp and sharp, no hint of aliasing or ghosting. I've been waiting for these specs for 2 years.

This is so much more comfortable for reading than my GT 7.7 (and I loved reading on that tablet!)

The screen is really good. You can see it here compared to the 1st gen N7 and the iPad mini:

In order: ipad mini, 2012 N7, 2013 N7.

Very happy with the new Nexus so far. Screen is very easy on the eyes. Loving it for ebooks and comics.

Me too. My eyes just didn't get along with 216ppi, hence not buying a 2012 Nexus 7 after playing with hubby's, as I knew it wouldn't suit.

Low resolution has never given me trouble when reading on tablets, but it is the backlit LCD display that causes eye strain for me after a while. For me, e-ink is still where it is at for reading e-books (I use the tablet for PDFs, though).

Glad that these kinds of specs have become so affordable, though!

How is it for reading in direct sunlight? This is where LCD tablets are generally poor.

Same here. I read a lot on my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, which I believe has a resolution of 149ppi, and have no issues with it at all. That's not to say that higher res isn't desirable, but it's frankly quite annoying to read the comments from people who pretend that anything less than WUXGA on a couple of inches is useless.

That is a very personal matter, what is no problem for you may well be unacceptable for others. Let your own eyes decide.

If you consistently get debilitating headaches after reading on a low resolution screen for an hour, it's not a good reading device for you. If you don't, great. Studies have shown that the less sharp text is, the more eyestrain it creates, but everyone has a personal limit for what their eyes can take.

But of course it is a personal matter. Pretty much everything is, so I'd have thought that was a given. However, I'm entirely confident that the majority of people find, or would find, 149ppi perfectly acceptable (given that the screen is otherwise of good quality). Why? Because I know a lot of people who've read on tablets for a couple of years, but no-one who've had any problems with the low resolution.

See reply above.

Obviously the opposite is equally true: that just because you get debilitating headaches after reading on a low-res screen for an hour doesn't mean everyone else does. Or even very many people at all. My own eyesight is hardly great, at -4.5/-3.75, but no, I experience no problems whatsoever even after 5-6 hours of reading.
